The Met Gala might be over, but we still haven’t moved on from Zendaya’s stunning looks. ICYMI, the Challengers star's Met Gala appearance as co-chair for "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" showcased two stunning gowns. The first was a Maison Margiela creation by John Galliano, which evoked a mystical forest fairy vibe with its green and blue hues and intricate grapevine embellishments. Her makeup complemented the ensemble with a vampy, 1920s flapper look.

The second gown is an archival piece from Galliano's 1996 Givenchy collection, featuring a billowing black gown with traditional lace-up corset details and a unique flower bouquet headpiece.

But here’s the kicker—did you know that instead of returning the second gown to the archives, Zendaya decided to add it to her personal wardrobe? According to her trusted stylist Law Roach, she bought it right after she fell in love with it during a fitting.

In an interview with Extra, Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach talked about how they sourced the actresses' looks for the Met Gala. It just so happened that Law stumbled upon the archival piece by Galliano at a vintage shop, and when he showed it to Zendaya, she immediately fell in love with it and decided to buy it.
“Oh we buy,” said Law, to which the interviewer replied in awe, “Wow, that’s almost unheard of.”
“Because how we look at it is, we’re really supporting small businesses. And I think it’s unfair to borrow from people who use those clothes as their livelihood,” Law explained further.
Adding to that, in a separate interview during a podcast episode of The Cutting Room Floor, Law also talked about how when Zendaya was still new to the industry, he would write to the "big five" (Chanel, Valentino, Dior, Saint Laurent, and Gucci) to dress Zendaya for her red carpet events, but they would all say no. Because of that, Law has been adamant about not dressing her with those brands even now that she's a big star, and to be honest, it doesn’t seem to be affecting her style game at all.
After a clip of the interview with Extra was posted on X (formerly Twitter), it quickly went viral. Netizens praised Zendaya and Law for their creativity and commitment to supporting small businesses by purchasing fashion pieces rather than borrowing them.
Netizens Applaud Zendaya for Purchasing Her Met Gala Gown Instead of Renting or Borrowing
“He ate with that last line!! We buy and don’t borrow when it’s people’s livelihoods source of income!! Because these [artists] have money not to [borrow] some archive pieces, [but to] buy them and honor the art of those pieces!” wrote one user.
“I love this. The amount of smaller artists and ateliers who lose commerce (or sometimes don't have items returned in good condition or at all) because lending out garments for influence has become the norm is staggering. It's so nice to see people who are doing it right,” wrote another.
