In a Preview Designer Faves episode, the comedienne narrated how she started accumulating big-name bags as a teenager, favoring brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Dior. But in an exclusive interview, she revealed the exact heartstring-tugging reason why she started collecting them in the first place.

During an unreleased interview tidbit of Rufa Mae’s Preview In Focus June 2023 feature, the actress recalled how she only owned one pair of shoes before her shot to fame, which actually already reached a deteriorated state. “’Nung bata ako, wala akong sapotos. Isa lang, tapos nasira at nabutas.”
Despite its condition and the slight wounds it brought to her feet, the star said she continued on using it. “Ginamit ko [pa din]. Siyempre, magkakakalyo ka.”
Because of this, Rufa Mae was intent on saving her hard-earned money for quality items, especially as she started earning more after her big break. “Mula noon, nag-invest na ako sa sapatos,” she said. The actress also attested to the advantages of designer items, including their appeal and durability.

Fortunately, Rufa Mae’s young daughter Athena wouldn’t have to face such a struggle. Her mom’s expansive collection has wowed even the likes of Heart Evangelista. Naturally, it begs the question—will Athena have a designer item as a prospective heirloom?
“Well, some!” Rufa Mae responded with a laugh. However, the mom-of-one believes that it’s all up to Athena whether she’d accept them. “Mas gusto ko ’yung anong gusto niya. Baka mamaya hindi naman niya type ’yung ganon.”
But when it comes to designer items, the actress is forthright about one thing—their ROI in the long run. “Ang ganda pang investment,” she said. “Talagang worth it din!”
