Donatella Versace has officially stepped down as the Creative Director of the Italian luxury brand founded by her late brother, Gianni Versace. The fashion icon will transfer her efforts to Versace’s global philanthropic and charitable pursuits as its Chief Brand Ambassador.
News of Donatella passing on the job has further fueled rumors of Prada possibly buying out Versace from its U.S. owner, Capri Holdings. Taking the helm from her is Dario Vitale, who’s already expressed his gratitude for the trust given to him as he seeks to bring a fresh perspective to the fashion house. “The House of Versace has a unique heritage that has spanned decades and has shaped the history of fashion,” he said. “It is a privilege to contribute to the future growth of Versace and its global impact through my vision, expertise and dedication.”

Below, let’s meet the esteemed designer set to make his mark with the Versace name.
Who Is Dario Vitale?
1. He studied at the Istituto Marangoni
Dario is an alumnus of the famed fashion design school based in Milan. He graduated in 2006 and is well-regarded by his alma mater for his “ability to blend modernity with heritage, along with his refined yet daring aesthetic.” The school brought up other influential fashion figures such as the founder of Moschino, Franco Moschino, and the former Creative Director of Gucci, Alessandra Facchinetti.
2. He was the former Design Director of Miu Miu
After graduating, Dario quickly made his presence known in the luxury game as he worked for brands like Bottega Veneta and Dsquared2. In 2010, he was hired at Miu Miu where he made his way up to become the brand’s Design and Image Director. Miu Miu is notably a subsidiary under the Prada Group, which has reportedly been in talks to acquire Versace.

3. He helped in Miu Miu’s exponential growth last year
According to Business Insider, Miu Miu saw “impressive growth” during Dario’s stint with the brand as he helped grow its revenue by 97.3% in 2024. With him as one of its lead visionaries, Miu Miu has also “consistently been named a top brand in recent years, becoming a major trendsetter in everything from ballet flats to underwear as outerwear and the viral micro-miniskirt.”
4. He’s the first non-Versace to lead the brand’s creative vision
Ever since Gianni Versace passed in 1997, Donatella has been its Creative Director for almost three decades. Dario’s appointment marks the first time in the brand’s history that a non-family member is taking on the role. This passing of the torch bares Donatella’s blessing in her warm welcome to the younger designer. “Championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me. I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and excited to see Versace through new eyes,” she said in a statement.

5. He’s on Instagram
Dario has kept a relatively low profile on social media, but it seems he’s ready to face the limelight after updating his bio with his new position. His Instagram, @dario___vitale, currently has zero posts, but we’re looking forward to his future uploads, which will hopefully include some behind-the-scenes action from his work in Versace.
