Keep your eyes peeled on your next trip abroad, you might just spot this bit of home on foreign shores.
SHOP: Uniqlo UT Shirt Designed by a Filipina Artist
The name is Regine Binuya Bague, whose design was chosen out of over 10,000 entries to the global UT Grand Prix Competition. This year's UTGP celebrates Disney's 100th anniversary and has invited talented designers worldwide to design shirts inspired by Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. Regine's was one of thirteen winning works to be made into a special collection.
Regine's design features unique typography of Alice in Wonderland's The Cheshire Cat and its famous quote: "Most everyone's mad here" in purple and pops of yellow on the back. The front design has the fictional cat's eyes peeking a bright yellow from the dark background.
During Uniqlo's UT Con 2023, she shares that she joined the competition "just for fun" after seeing it on Uniqlo's page. It's definitely a highlight, she adds.
"I remember when I was in college, in our typography class, I did a Disney-inspired typography calendar. This time naman I thought of creating a Disney character's famous lines," she says. "I was just very inspired to bring out the old student artist in me." If there's one advice that she wants to give, it's to "never stop creating."
"If it is something that you love and enjoy, you can find inspiration in everything and everywhere. If you enjoy what you do, you'll be able to create artworks and pieces that everyone will love to wear," she says.
Regine's design will be available in Uniqlo around the world. According to the website, the shirt will be available in late May for P790.
