First debuted on the runway in the 80s, the two-toe design has since been combined with other timeless designs like Mary Janes, mules, loafers, and more to give pairs that much-needed oomph. What is a Tabi shoe?
The split-toe design of Tabis was originally for socks, with its origins tracing back to the 15th century in Japan. It is said that the Japanese workers' toes are meant to be split by the fabric to "promote balance" and a clear mind. They were usually worn with "thonged footwear."
They were turned into footwear in the 18th and 19th centuries—which later on became a reference for Martin Margiela, the founder of Maison Margiela, for his first model of Tabis in 1988. Maison Margiela is now known for its iconic Tabis in modified silhouettes and varying colorways.
