Ready to step up your shoe game?

We're pretty sure you've seen it somewhere—the split-toe design adorning the feet of fashion tastemakers worldwide. Called the Tabi shoes, these steppers were first popularized by luxury brand Maison Margiela. First debuted on the runway in the 80s, the two-toe design has since been combined with other timeless designs like Mary Janes, mules, loafers, and more to give pairs that much-needed oomph. So, if you've been planning to spruce up your wardrobe, we've seen some pairs from local brand Thy Roots that can do the job.

What is a Tabi shoe?

The split-toe design of Tabis was originally for socks, with its origins tracing back to the 15th century in Japan. It is said that the Japanese workers' toes are meant to be split by the fabric to "promote balance" and a clear mind. They were usually worn with "thonged footwear."

They were turned into footwear in the 18th and 19th centuries—which later on became a reference for Martin Margiela, the founder of Maison Margiela, for his first model of Tabis in 1988. Maison Margiela is now known for its iconic Tabis in modified silhouettes and varying colorways.

Local brand Thy Roots has a selection of classic silhouettes with a unique split-toe design. They got Mary Janes, mules, and loafers in leather—all under the P7,000 price mark. Handcrafted in Marikina, their collection of shoes are made with premium genuine leather.

Cudi Tabi Mules

If you're after simple and traditional mixed with the split-toe design, the Cudi - Tabi Mules  is a perfect choice. This pair has, of course, the split toe and a full back heel. While mules typically abolish the back heel for easier access, the Cudi's wide opening allow for easy slipping on and off. Just like Travis, a.k.a. their Loafer version.
