The past year has seen an uptick in polo shirts, partly thanks to the Spring/Summer 2024 collections of Dries Van Noten, Martine Rose, Miu Miu, and Tommy Hilfiger, among others. In conjunction with these runway appearances is the general interest in "tenniscore" and the prevalent evolution of the academia aesthetic.
Striped long-sleeved versions have become noticeably popular, presumably because of their origins in athleticism. Alternatively referred to as a rugby shirt or jersey, the piece was first worn by players participating in the intensive sport. The extended sleeves were meant to protect one's arms from being wounded or bruised.
Nowadays, the sportswear staple is styled for the streets rather than the fields. Often, they're teamed with itty-bitty skirts or shorts to offset the shirt's length and bagginess. In the shoe department, they're worn with sneakers to keep things sporty, or conversely, with girlish Mary Janes or flats for a little variation.

At once laidback and sophisticated, Miu Miu has come out with its own take on the polo, combining complementary hues and going for a more oversized fit. For one of her flights home, Anne Curtis teamed a tri-color jersey with distressed boyfriend jeans and a jumbo Chanel Flap.
