Slim’s Fashion and Arts School students are proving that there is beauty in every little thing, even those one might consider to have no value. Case in point is their new exhibit. Called Alchemy, the students take the spirit of this ancient practice and applies it in making clothes. Selected students "were encouraged to create clothing that would first be visually appealing, before it became apparent that the garment was made with repurposed materials." Thus, all the pieces in the exhibit are upcycled creations, an important process in today's fashion landscape. Moreover, the "Slim’s students have approached it in a manner that reflects their extensive skills: the clothes are polished and refined."
Slim's Alchemy: The Best of Student Work 2019 will be on exhibit at Mega Fashion Hall, SM Megamall from September 26 to October 4, and is open to the public.
Banjo Cordero
Banjo mades a draped jacket made with waterproof tent material featuring lace-up panels with toggles.
Dastyn De Jesus
Dastyn hand-painted this gown and cape with dragon scales made from discarded CDs.
Dee Dumlao
Dee created a gladiator-inspired terno embellished with repurposed venetian blinds and wire tubing.
Dinnes Obusan and Krysta Mitchell-Morley
Dinnes made this draped dress and embellished it with hand-painted and varnished popsicle sticks. Meanwhile, Krysta created a mosaic overdress constructed from used, hand-painted tarpaulin to create a leatherette look.
Elaine Justine
Elaine created this terno over-blouse from cotton rope used for household mops.

Ellen made a cocktail terno embellished with discarded fabric scraps manipulated to resemble cherry blossoms.
Glynn Alley, Caress Carranza, Redge Tabaniag
Glynn and Caress made this barong and terno embellished with discarded X-ray films. On the right, this honeycomb-inspired barong by Redge is embellished with discarded PVC plastics and faux leather. Buttons were hand painted with bees.
Godofredo and Dinnes Obusan
Godofredo's piece is inspired by Philippine indigenous textiles, embellished with plastic straws. Dinnes made a contemporary tribal inspired barong embellished with plastic straws and fishnet accents.
Irmalyn Raquedan and Gino Reed
Irmalyn's panda on this barong was created by hand knotting individual tufts of plastic straw on fishnet. Gino's playful barong, on the other hand, features multiple layers of old shirt sleeves.
Isabelle Morris
Isabelle made an ensemble made from discarded school uniforms, with elastic and safety pin accents.
Ivy Reyes, Mara Dizon, and Cecilia Evangelista
Ivy created a barong embellished with a lace bib appliqué made of fused orts and upcycled thread scraps. Mara did a stitch-and-slash technique on fabric scraps to create a “faux chenille” texture on this barong inspired by old maps while Cecilia took shredded fabric wastes from a serger machine and sew them together with metallic thread to create this daytime terno.
Jaq Hernandez
Jaq made this piece with old neckties and bowties. It's a jacket inspired by Christian Dior’s New Look.
Jeffrey Tope
Jeffrey made a hand painted terno embellished with structured cable wires.
Joanna Manalili
Joanna created a dress and coat with embellished with discarded plastic bags hand-crocheted into flowers.
She also made this piña-jusi cocktail terno embellished with hand-stitched clothing labels and care tags.
Jomar Saldo
Jomar hand-braided net for the outer dress which was creatively secured with plastic cable ties.
Marcy created a draped jacket and skirt made with plastic wrappers and denim remnants.

Sheila embellished this blouse and skirt with hand-cut discarded DVDs.

Marigrace made a raincoat with a detachable cape made of neon fabric scraps fused between two layers of plastic garbage bags.

Pau hand-painted this barong inspired by Japanese tattoos and embellished it with tabs collected from soda cans.
