The landscape of Filipino fashion is perpetually in a state of buzz, with new makers entering the scene alongside their respective muses. Among them is 18-year-old Reneé Hartshorne, a fresh face who's already establishing herself as a mainstay in today's editorials and runways.
Signed with Mercator Model Management, she took on the role of the quintessential Martin Bautista girl at the Preview Ball 2024, showcasing the Best Filipino Fashion Designer's work from our September 2024 cover.

Despite her youth—she's still deep into her studies and balances her career with exams and school projects—Reneé shows clear signs of being one of her generation's top models. In this edition of Preview Go-See, we get to know the up-and-comer as she talks about how she started and which direction she wants to strut towards with her career.
Preview Go-See: Renée Hartshorne

Hi Reneé! Tell us the story of how you got your start in the modeling industry. How did you get "discovered"?
"My sister and I did a small show for a fashion school near our area. One of the designers recommended me to go to an open casting for an agency, and now I’ve been [modeling] for the past seven years."
How long have you been a model and what do you love the most about it?
"I started in 2017. Becoming a model was something I never anticipated as it came to me unexpectedly. I never really thought about [being a model] until I was offered [to be one]."

"The reason why I continue and truly love this career is because I've been able to connect with so many other people, especially other models, and experience and share so much love along the way. I never expected how much this career would impact me personally. These connections are something I’ll always hold close to my heart and never let go of."
Would you say being a model is your dream job? Why or why not?
"There are a few things I want to be in life and being a model is definitely somewhere on the top of my list. I love the idea of embodying an artist's vision, of bringing more life into their ideas, and being part of something that’s filled with meaning and beauty."

What was the biggest struggle you’ve faced in the modeling industry and how did you overcome it?
"Maintaining patience. Not everyone you encounter will be nice, respectful, or understanding. There have been many instances where I've felt or seen other people in the industry be undervalued or disrespected.
"I think it’s easy for some people to forget that models are human beings with feelings, needs, and boundaries, not just random mannequins. I learned the importance of standing up for myself. I’ve managed to overcome these problems and continue being myself by staying professional and treating everyone I encounter with respect.
"At the end of the day, we are all trying to [achieve a shared] goal, so maintaining a respectful environment for everyone is key."

What would you say is the most memorable project you’ve done as a model so far?
"I’ve created many different memories through each project I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of. Every single one holds value and has a special place in my heart. Each project is a unique journey for me, so I can’t choose just one."
How do you see your career progressing in the future? Do you have a dream modeling gig?
"I don’t know what the future holds; however, I'm excited to see what’s in store for me as time goes by. Every project is already a blessing but I think going international would be a dream come true."

What’s something unique about you that sets you apart from all other models?
"I think every model is unique in their own little ways; however, I know that I'm able to make people around me feel safe and comfortable, [which enables] them to be themselves around me.
"I’m also very open to anything and everything! I'm not scared to go out of my comfort zone, and I love bringing life to other people's ideas no matter what they may be. I think I'm easy and enjoyable to be around and work with."

What’s your go-to model-off-duty look?
"I mix up my style a lot and switch things from time to time. Though, you will definitely catch me in a mini dress or loungewear the most!"

In your own opinion, what are the characteristics of a great model?
"I think a great model embodies professionalism in every aspect of their work, [which includes] being punctual and understanding the creative vision of artists.
"They should also be authentic and unafraid to be themselves. Being a model isn’t just about being pretty, as it goes beyond just being attractive. It's a mix of many things."

Any advice to aspiring models?
"Being a model isn’t just a pretty lifestyle, it’s a career. Things take time, so be patient and enjoy the journey. Mentally prepare yourself to experience many unexpected things, but don’t lose hope. Things will fall into place."
