The brand continues to inspire generations to chase their own version of the American dream.

Ralph Lauren, often simply called Polo, has long been the epitome of preppy Americana, embodying luxury, quality, and aspirational living. With its iconic Polo logo and timeless designs, the brand represents more than just clothes—it’s a lifestyle rooted in affluence and sophistication.

Recently, the idea of the "Ralph Lauren girl" or "boy" has become trendy again, with TikTok and Instagram feeds filled with carefully curated preppy outfits and equestrian-inspired aesthetics. But this isn’t anything new—the Ralph Lauren dream has been a symbol of aspiration since the '80s, when its blend of polished ease and old-money charm first captured imaginations. Beyond fashion, though, Ralph Lauren’s legacy is one of ambition, vision, and crafting a world many still long to be part of.

A Brief History of Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren’s journey to building a $7-billion global empire is nothing short of remarkable. Born Ralph Lifshitz in the Bronx, New York, Lauren’s early life was far removed from the luxury he would one day represent. He studied at Baruch College, sold ties to his classmates, and later worked for Brooks Brothers before launching his own line under the Polo name in 1967.

Defying trends, Lauren introduced wide, high-end ties, selling them to prestigious stores like Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s. Operating from a single drawer in the Empire State Building, he sold $500,000 worth of ties in his first year. The Ralph Lauren Corporation went public in 1997, cementing its status as an American super brand.

The company’s portfolio now includes Polo Ralph Lauren, Purple Label, RRL, and Club Monaco, each offering a unique take on timeless style. Despite his meteoric rise, Lauren has stayed true to his vision of selling not just clothes but an immersive lifestyle.

Ralph Lauren’s Influence on Hip-Hop

While Ralph Lauren originally designed his Polo brand for a world of country clubs and opulent lifestyles, it became an unexpected cultural phenomenon in the streets of New York during the late 1980s. The Polo brand found a new audience within the burgeoning hip-hop scene, where its aesthetic of affluence, style, and exclusivity resonated deeply with urban communities.
One of the key players in this cultural crossover was the Lo-Lifes, a Brooklyn-based crew who adopted Polo as their uniform of choice. Their name was derived from the last syllable of Polo—“Lo”—and their mantra was simple: wear Polo head-to-toe, embracing and claiming a lifestyle that was never originally intended for them. Polo became a statement of aspiration and rebellion, a way to challenge societal norms and limitations.
As Rack-Lo, co-founder of the Lo-Lifes, explained in an interview with The Fader: “By seeing the clothing, it inspired us to know that there was more to life than being in Brooklyn and being stuck here, living at this limited pace. It inspired us to pursue those things: to go yachting, to be on Fifth Avenue, to be a part of the rich and the elite, and to try and acquire the American Dream the way we know how to do it. And that was through fashion and boosting.”
The Lo-Lifes initially gained notoriety for their “boosting” practices—stealing Polo pieces to curate their distinctive looks. Over time, this underground movement gained cultural legitimacy and even influenced mainstream hip-hop. By the 1990s, Polo became a defining symbol in the rap world, with artists such as Kanye West, Nas, and Polo G embracing the brand in their music and style.

This unique appropriation of Polo by hip-hop artists highlights the genre’s powerful ability to reinterpret and redefine luxury. While Ralph Lauren designed Polo for a specific audience, hip-hop culture reframed it as a badge of honor, creativity, and survival, ultimately bridging the gap between two very different worlds.
The movement also underscored the deep loyalty hip-hop communities have for fashion brands that resonate with their values and aspirations. Just as Nelly’s Air Force Ones celebrated Nike’s iconic sneakers, Polo became a cultural icon for those seeking to reimagine the American dream on their own terms.
Today, the Lo-Lifes’ legacy continues to influence fashion and music, proving that Ralph Lauren’s designs transcend the boundaries of class and culture. Hip-hop took Polo from Madison Avenue to the streets, creating a lasting impact that endures more than four decades later.

The History of the Polo Bear

Few fashion icons are as beloved as the Polo Bear. Introduced in 1991, this teddy bear has donned everything from cable-knit sweaters to tuxedos, embodying Ralph Lauren’s classic style with a playful twist.

Inspired by Ralph Lauren’s brother Jerry’s Steiff bear collection, the Polo Bear first appeared as a limited-edition teddy and later became a staple on sweaters, shirts, and even watches. Over the years, the bear has evolved into an enduring symbol of Ralph Lauren’s brand identity, proving that sophistication and charm can coexist.
