It’s this in-between that local clothing brand, Palengke, tries to target with their out-of-the-box creations that also seamlessly match with any pairing.
What is PLNGKE?
When hearing the word “Palengke”, the first thought most would have are our local marketplaces bustling with life. The founders chose to name their store after this Filipino word because of how it resembles the vibrancy of the Filipino culture as well as its people, most authentically. “We wanted something that screams fun, local, “makulit”, and at the same time something that represents day-to-day life. We wanted to celebrate the unnoticeable parts that make us Filipino, and so we chose to name our brand Palengke,” owners Paulina Dayrit and Jill Santos shared.
Wanting to differentiate their creations from others in the market, Palengke seeks inspiration from mundane items that aren’t normally celebrated in the Filipino lifestyle—and their off-key designs definitely speak for themselves! A crowd-favorite item from their collection is the Knaur Cube heels, characterized by their chunky block heel inspired by the ubiquitous bouillon cube that’s a staple in Filipino households.
How did PLNGKE start?
All good things never have an easy beginning, and that’s exactly how Paulina and Jill felt with starting their own brand. Being newbies in the industry, the duo had to develop Palengke from the ground up. From building their connections and suppliers to sourcing and sourcing the right samples—they knew their launch collection couldn’t be anything less than perfect. Regardless of being in the middle of a pandemic and having to juggle their academics at the same time, the pair wouldn’t have it any other way. “Through this, we were able to enhance our problem-solving skills, as well as learn a lot about the design and production process on our own,” they said.
