A wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event. For some who can afford it, it warrants dropping millions, if only to stage the fairytale ending they’ve always dreamt of. But is there such a thing as too much for a bride’s special day?
Take for example the most expensive wedding dress in the world: a gem-studded couture piece worth a whopping $15 million (or approximately P815,250,000)! This lavish frock was created by Egyptian dressmaker Hany El Behairy.
Famous for his opulent displays on the runway, the designer has made a habit of presenting a luxurious wedding gown as his pièce de résistance during the end of his annual fashion shows. In celebration of his 100th show in Cairo back in 2019, Hany unveiled his most ludicrously-priced creation yet.
Modeled by Egyptian actress Mai Omar, the 15-million-dollar gown sports a high-low skirt encrusted with a sea of diamonds and other gemstones. The same embellishments are scattered across its long train and star-decorated veil, which make for the gown’s cosmic price tag.
Hany’s piece received varied reactions at the time it launched. Where some praised him for the feat, netizens on social media criticized the “provocative” cost of the gown. In defense of his creation, the designer explained that they did not intend to put it up for sale. Instead, the frock’s true purpose was to shine a spotlight on the Egyptian fashion industry.
Prior to this, the title of most expensive wedding dress belonged to The Diamond Wedding Gown, a frock valued at $12 million. It was born out of the collaboration between luxury designer Renee Strauss and jeweler Martin Katz. Unveiled in 2006, the dress, unlike Hany’s, reportedly remains up for sale, just waiting for an outrageously-endowed bride to take it home.
