Creations by Filipino designers took center stage in this year's Miss Universe pageant. From Victoria Velasquez Vincent of New Zealand donning a national costume by Axel Que to Christina Chalk of Great Britain’s serpentine gown by Ehrran Montoya, Filipino-made ensembles were evidently a recurring theme throughout the event. Among the Filipino designers featured during the pageant was Rian Fernandez, whose mythology-inspired evening gown for Miss Universe Thailand 2024 Opal Suchata, stood out for its sleek silhouette and intricate detailing.

In an Instagram post, designer Rian Fernandez shared that the gown is a tribute to Thep Kinnaree, a half-woman, half-swan creature from ancient Thai folklore. Called the "Queen's Wings of Triumph," the column dress features a corseted bodice, punctuated by an off-shoulder neckline fashioned after a swan's feathered wings.
The bodice down to the skirt features a "celestial effect" pattern, referencing how starlight reflects on water. To achieve this, Rian made use of luxurious micro sequin embroidery in shimmering gold and white, rendered through a palette of soft creams and dazzling gold. "As she glides across the stage, the gown embodies a regal essence that captures the enchanting spirit of the Kinnaree, leaving an indelible mark of elegance and grace," Rian concluded his Instagram post.
This isn’t the first time Rian Fernandez has collaborated with Opal Suchata. He also designed her show-stopping gown when she claimed the Miss Universe Thailand title earlier this year. Moreover, Rian’s work has dressed numerous Miss Universe contestants, including R’Bonney Nola Gabriel, Miss Universe 2022. During the finals of the 71st Miss Universe, R’Bonney stunned in a form-fitting black gown adorned with sapphires, a nod to Rian’s penchant for marrying intricate embellishments with timeless silhouettes.
