Miss International 2024’s Miss Vietnam, Huynh Thi Thanh Thuy, made history on November 12 after becoming the first in her country to bag the pageant’s winning title. In the finale held in Tokyo, Japan, Thanh Thuy was crowned wearing a gown inspired by the host city—a choice that almost didn’t happen, according to a recent interview.

In an interview with Inquirer.net, the beauty queen shared that her team had their reservations about the sequined piece she eventually wore to her coronation, but a push from Than Thuy herself made the memorable pink gown her winning look.
“Some people [didn’t] like this dress before, but I gave my own decision, and the truth is it suits the crown a lot,” she said to the press after the finale.

Created by Vietnamese designer Le Thanh Hoa, the Miss International 2024 winner was garbed in the off-shouldered piece crafted from mikado fabric, detailed with delicate pink floral embellishments throughout the bodice and extending down the skirt. According to the designer’s Instagram post, the gown took over 200 hours to complete.

The beadwork and floral appliqués take direct inspiration from Japan’s national flower, the sakura, with each pink crystal and sequin forming the cherry blossom petals in a canvas of white, similar to Mount Fuji’s snow-capped peak. The designer explained that early spring blossoms symbolized “luck, faith, and hope,” and compared Than Thuy to the cherry blossoms’ gentleness and resilience.
The beauty queen highlighted the cherry blossoms as a prime reason why she decided on the piece. “It is the sakura,” she said in the same interview with the Philippine news outlet. “I think that it suits me, the pink suits me, and it suits the crown, so I chose this dress.”

Congrats, Than Thuy!
