If there’s anything Mike Yapching isn’t afraid of, it’s mixing unexpected elements together to create a one-of-a-kind piece—and this is exactly the type of cohesive madness that makes his dresses a work of art.
For this season, Mike took inspiration from water—more specifically, its rippling movement. His collection, aptly named Ripple, features pieces with evoked the motions of the element—flowing, volatile, and ever-changing. It was done with his fearless flair for dressing women, with each piece as audacious as the next.
A noticeable difference in Ripple compared to his past work was the element of freshness. Aside from gray and navy, the designer used cream and white fabrics, breaking the otherwise rigid structures of the whole collection. When asked for his favorite piece, the designer says, "If I have to [choose], it would be the fringed, one-shoulder, dotted organza dress in off white and nave blue. It’s soft and light compared to the garments I normally make."
Naturally, he did not stray from his signature wave patterns, which took on beautiful iterations. He incorporated it subtly through a dress' waistband and in plain sight as an asymmetrical bustier, the latter of which was definitely a crowd favorite.
