Back in March 2021, Mika Reins starred in her first-ever Preview cover after she just won the digital creators' category of the international modeling competition Elite Model Look. At the time, the Chinese-Filipina was still deep into her studies, working towards a Management degree at the Ateneo de Manila University. She was also a member of our inaugural Preview Clique, making her one of our true-blue Preview muses.
A lot has happened since two years ago, but what's remained the same is Mika's down-to-earth attitude and sense of professionalism. What's changed, however, is just how much she's mastered the craft she's been doing since she was a toddler. Just this month, she returned to our digital pages as she posed in our Best Filipino Fashion Designers 2023 spread.
At just 22 years old, Mika's striking visage and languid movements have graced several editorials and campaigns. As a proud member of the Professional Models' Association of the Philippines (PMAP), she embodies what it means to be a living, breathing piece of art. Ahead, we catch up with the supermodel-to-be as she lets us in on her future plans within and beyond the catwalk.
Preview Go-See: Mika Reins
How did you get your start in the modeling industry? Tell us the story of how you got “discovered.”
"My journey into the modeling industry was a mix of timing and luck. During my high school days, I was selected by my batchmates as our representative for a Miss Sportsfest competition. I didn’t know how to pose or walk so I enrolled myself into a workshop. It was during that workshop that my mentor discovered my potential and encouraged me for a casting/go-see.
"I was chosen for the project and [I was] surprised that it was for a Dove campaign, [making it a] significant milestone as my first major project. Following this, I received an invitation from PMAP to become a member of their esteemed organization.
"Looking back, I realize that modeling found me, and it was pure destiny. Initially, I thought that my talents were limited, but as I ventured further, doors opened progressively. This experience taught me that I am capable of achieving much more than I initially think."
How long have you been a model and what do you love the most about it?
"When I was younger, my mom used to work in a publication, so she would take me along as her baby model for a few editorials. I can say I've actually been modeling since I was a little. She also encouraged me to take acting classes at ABS-CBN when I was young because I was quite shy. I was even set to start a career as a child actor in here in the Philippines and in Thailand (So odd haha!), but my mom believed that focusing on my studies was more important.
"At the age of 16, I began getting back into modeling, doing it part-time during high school and college. Now, I've been modeling professionally for six years.
"What I truly love about modeling is getting into different characters and contributing to someone's creative vision. It's a beautiful experience being a part of the artistic process, where I can experiment with my own movements and unconventional poses, which result in amazing images. Additionally, I cherish the opportunity to meet and learn from individuals with diverse stories and backgrounds."
Would you say being a model is your dream job? Why or why not?
"Modeling wasn't my dream job when I was little because I grew up in a family with a strong [inclination to] business. I always believed that I would end up as an entrepreneur or as a businesswoman. As I grew older, I began to realize how modeling, fashion, beauty, and art have influenced the person I aspire to be.
"Currently, my career is in a constant state of evolution as I explore acting and the world of show business. I'm genuinely grateful because I've always wanted to do more than just modeling. I like to believe that it's a platform that will guide me towards my next career path."
What was the biggest struggle you’ve faced in the modeling industry and how did you overcome it?
"One of the most significant challenges I encountered revolved around my Asian features. There were moments when I sensed that, when compared to Brazilians, Mestizas or Morenas, Asian features weren't as widely embraced in the Philippines. However, looking at it from a different perspective, I also see it as an advantage. The industry has yet to see a multitude of Asian faces, and this set me apart in a distinctive way."
What would you say is the most memorable project you’ve done as a model so far?
"Without a doubt, one of my most cherished memories is my debut Preview cover shot by Koji Arboleda. This project holds a special place in my heart because, on the day of the shoot, it felt as if we entered the studio as blank canvases, meticulously crafting a narrative through the art of movement, beautifully captured in each photograph.
"Another project that holds immense significance for me was an editorial for Rebel Magazine, my first international editorial shot in Jakarta, Indonesia and captured by the talented @udaeki . This marked my inaugural feature in an international magazine, an accomplishment that truly stands out in my journey."
How do you see your career progressing in the future? Do you have a dream modeling gig?
"As I move forward, I picture myself traveling back and forth between Los Angeles, New York City, and Europe for international modeling. Yet, I'm equally committed to coming back to the Philippines to prioritize my acting and show business career. My dream modeling gig is to be part of a Miu Miu, Sandy Liang, or Chanel campaign."
What’s something unique about you that sets you apart from all other models?
"One trait that sets me apart is likely my eyes. People often mention how my eyes can radiate a sense of happiness even in the absence of a smile.
"Additionally, [it's also] my unique background as a Chinese-Filipino. Our community here in the Philippines is incredibly close, and embracing both Chinese and Filipino cultures offers me the best of both worlds. This fusion provides me a rich tapestry of values, culture, and heritage that keeps me grounded and fuels my drive to be strong, resilient, and hardworking."
What’s your go-to model-off-duty look?
"No make up, lots of skincare, crop top, wide legged pants, shoes, and an oversized jacket."
In your own opinion, what are the characteristics of a great model?
"To me, the characteristics of a great model are being instinctive and versatile. [It's about] being aware of what’s happening and learning from the experience. Instinctive models can bring a genuine and authentic quality to their work. Their natural reactions and expressions can make the image, or [make] their runway walks feel more relatable and emotionally engaging to the audience.
"Whereas, being versatile plays an important role because fashion often involves quick changes, unexpected scenarios, and varying environments. A versatile model can adapt swiftly, making the most of any situation without missing a beat."
What’s your advice to aspiring models?
"Just go for it, but make sure you're doing it with real purpose. A model isn’t built in a day, it [takes her] countless rejections, challenges, and setbacks to cultivate the confidence and strength she needs. And never take things to heart. If you face failure today, learn from it, refine your skills and talents, stand tall, and try again."
