While for some, dressing up simply means putting pieces together to create an outfit. However, in Caitlin Gaille de Guzman’s case, it’s her way of presenting how she wants to be perceived in the world. Such is the nature of fashion where you’re free to express your entire personality all through an ensemble and, for the owner of sustainable brand Merakibowy, also meant finding a a sense of security.
What is Merakibowy?
An amalgamation of the Greek word Meraki, which means to do things with soul, creativity and love, and Bowy, which was taken from Caitlin’s favorite Canadian supermodel, Daria Meraki, it’s clear to see that Merakibowy was a brand made from something deeply personal. With their romantic, bohemian inspired pieces made out of 85% dead stock fabric, their creations are distinctly unique from other sustainable brands currently out in the market and was, in fact, inspired by Caitlin’s own go-to wardrobe back in her college days.
How did Merakibowy start?
A fashion brand was always something Caitlin wanted to pursue in her life, what with her penchant for designing clothes on the side and even studying fashion design. It also helped that she had a natural inclination to creativity and expressing herself through clothes was almost second nature to her. Finding the local landscape lacking in familiar pieces that had a unique twist, she took it upon herself to fill this gap on her own.
Thus, the desire to start her own clothing brand turned into a need for the young CEO. She finally took the leap in focusing full-time on her brand after she received positive feedback from buyers during bazaars.

Take one look at Merakibowy’s Instagram and you’ll find swoon-worthy pieces in muted colors and distinct textures. In an age where fast fashion seems to be the norm, Caitlin’s brand is taking active steps to veer away from that by interjecting sustainability where she can. Case in point: Each piece is made out of abandoned textiles that’s given a new life thanks to the brands circular creation process. It’s also this system that gives Merakibowy’s clothing their distinguishable, raw-like quality with each design, instantly making them a closet mainstay.
