Melville Sy on His Personal Sense of Style

How and when did you get started as a stylist? Did you always want to work in this industry?

"I’ve wanted to have a career in fashion for as long as I can remember. I took up fashion design and merchandising in college, took on styling internships, and even worked jobs in retail as a designer and visual merchandiser for two different fashion brands before becoming a full-time stylist."

"Today, I’m a co-founder of Studio 24c, a boutique styling and lifestyle consultancy studio."

What inspires your style? Has your line of work influenced it in any way?

"I’m a little bit of everything. I’m someone who gets inspired by a lot of different things. [I could get inspired by] what I see on the runways or in magazines, [by what's trending] on social media, by what I see during my travels, by what people in my life and those I meet through work are wearing… the list goes on! I think that’s the beauty of a career in fashion. You’re constantly immersed in experiences that shape trends and culture."

What are five of your favorite fashion items and why? Are there any stories with these items that you can share?

"One of my top five pieces would probably be my faux fur Maison Margiela Tabis because I’m obsessed with anything furry."

"I also love my Cartier Love bracelet which, as one would expect, I’ve been wearing since forever. The same goes with my tricolor Hermès Mini Kelly."

"Another favorite would be my Schiaparelli bag that was gifted by my long-time client and dear friend Marian. Lastly, I also love my Rolex Submariner watch which was gifted by my dad."

What’s your go-to off-duty look and why?

"Comfort is my top priority in dressing up. On a regular day, you’ll probably catch me in an oversized Uniqlo Airism tee paired with Issey Miyake Pleats Please pants or breezy wide-leg pants from Lululemon."

Could you share some style tips for people who are only getting into fashion?

"Fashion, at the end of the day, is a form of self-expression. What matters most is how you feel about a piece, and more so how you feel when you wear it. Trends come and go, so the most important thing is that you opt for looks and pieces that make sense to you."

"A second tip, perhaps, would be to invest in timeless pieces. You could build countless looks, or even a whole wardrobe, around classic, well-made pieces."
