How does one capture the essence of a beloved internet sensation? That was the mission Preview set out on when we shot Melai Cantiveros for our January 2024 cover.

Given her omnipresence on social media and her spike in virality during the Asia Artists Awards held late last year, it was simply imperative to have her kick off 2024 by gracing our cover. Dressed in campy and colorful ensembles, "momshie" Mels proved that one is indeed never fully dressed without a smile.

"Melai really captures the cultural zeitgeist of this internet-obsessed generation," says Preview Editor-in-Chief Marj Ramos-Clemente. "She's funny, she's relevant, she's relatable, and fashion is supposed to be like that. We're not supposed to take everything too seriously."
Fun fact: The shoot occurred exactly a week after Melai stormed the AAAs! Mounting things was a whirlwind of an assignment, as there were less than three days to have everything—from the clothes to the production design—set in place. Thankfully, our contributors, including makeup artist Jake Galvez, hairstylist Jan Edrosolan, and set designer Paul Jatayna, were up for the task.
When it came to the photos, Creative Director Bacs Arcebal aimed to exhibit how "Melai can make the simplest things fun and entertaining." In front of the skilled lenses of Cenon at Mav, our cover girl breathed new life into everyday chores.
As she donned eye-catching pieces from Carolina Herrera, Fiorucci, Sheriko Sarinas, Yana Kalaw x Ha.Mu, and more, Melai's bright and fun personality shone through. Truly, she was a first honor in serving it for the camera.
