Markarvin and Michael tied the knot in outfits that not only represented their love for one another, but also for the country where their partnership flourished.

Markarvin and Michael describe their wedding day as their own version of a "love letter to the Philippines." After seven doting years, the couple finally tied the knot in the company of their closest friends and family on April 13, 2023. As a tribute to the country where their relationship has blossomed, the two decided to theme their nuptials as a "tropical garden Filipiniana" affair, with both of their garments representing just as much.

In an exclusive interview with Preview, Markarvin shares that he and his husband wanted "modern yet traditional looks" that would instantly remind them of their special day. He goes on to share that there's been some sort of "creative revolution" when it comes to the local fashion and arts scene, with a distinct beckoning to define "Filipino-ness" in the 21st century. With Markarvin's post as an entrepreneur, and Michael serving as a teacher, the two wanted to reflect the movement through their celebration.

To achieve wedding looks that would capture their essence, Markarvin and Michael tapped local designer Gabbie Sarenas. They cite how the delicate nature of her works are reminiscient of classic images of camisa-clad Filipinas. "What we love the most about her designs is that they’re grounded in tradition yet [are] so contemporary. [They're] cerebral but warm, [and are also] charming and playful," Markarvin says.

Crafted out of piña silk, dyed silk linen, and cotton eyelet fabric, the outfits are reimagined takes on the Filipiniana attire. Michael's look was comprised of wide-legged trousers and a tri-collared shirt done up with ties instead of buttons. Meanwhile, Markarvin's was an editorial-style ensemble binded together by sheets of fabric gathered on his shoulder.

Specks of gold, Filipino pearls, and different combinations of silk were all key components in crafting their looks. They poetically express that "the flow of pearlescent white natural fibers, the archipelagic stitches of gold, and our love of pageantry and OPM (especially Pinoy disco) all united to build a celebration of the Filipiniana and our own relationship."

Even their rings were symbols of their mutual adoration for the Philippines and its treasures. Designed in collaboration with jewelry label Nami, their rings aimed to represent Markarvin's love for the waves of the sea, and Michael's peaceful disposition at the sight of rice terraces.

On the day they exchanged vows, the pair felt a certain kind of pride they've never experienced before. Everything from their thoughtfully-made outfits, down to their cake and floral arrangements, were executed to a tee. The event became a celebration of many things: Their patriotism, their queerness, and, of course, their unwavering love for one another.
