Last September 13, Filipino drama film Sunshine held its red carpet premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Antoinette Jadaone-helmed title stars Maris Racal as the titular character, a gymnast whose dreams are compromised due to an accidental pregnancy.
However, due to scheduling conflicts, the lead actress was absent from the premiere, much to the dismay of her fans and Maris herself. However, she made the most out of the milestone and shared her supposed look for the festival online.

In a photoshoot lensed by Dookie Ducay, Maris posed in a dynamic bias-cut dress by Marc Rancy. The look was comprised of a backless black bodysuit and a tri-color skirt, rendered in hues of white, blue, and yellow. Stylist Adrianne Concepcion teamed the dress with red hot stilettos and chunky gold earrings.
In an Instagram post, Maris briefly talked about the look, saying she planned to wear it for the film festival. She closed out her caption on an optimistic note, writing, "Excited na ako umikot ang pelikulang Sunshine sa buong mundo! At sana mapalabas na to sa Pilipinas soon!" As of the time of writing, screening for the movie is still in the works.
Designer Marc Rancy Talks About Maris Racal's TIFF 2024 Dress
In an exclusive chat with Preview, Marc discusses the inspiration behind the dress, pointing out that the color scheme was representative of the Philippine flag. "[It is] an homage to Philippine ingenuity, not only in sports but in film and creative arts," he shares. "We wanted to do a Pinoy pride moment in the most subtle of ways."
The designer adds that, in the photo shoot, the yellow sheet was utilized similarly to a floor gymnastics ribbon. Aside from the ribbon, the skin-tight black bodysuit also harked back to a gymnast's traditional uniform. "We wanted a dress that was soft and fluid [and] highlighted [Maris'] curves and posture in every movement, [which is] essential to the sport and the character she represents," Marc states.
