If there was a Filipina celebrity who deserves the title of "gay icon," it would be Maricel Soriano. Hence, it's no surprise that she was a guest judge on the ongoing second season of Drag Race Philippines.
On episode six of the competition, the Diamond Star served as a mentor for the queens' acting challenge. When it was time to hit the runway, she walked out in a crimson red number that harked back to one of her most recognizable on-screen characters of all time.
LOOK: Maricel Soriano in a Reimagined Take on Her "Ikaw Pa Lang Ang Minahal" Look on "Drag Race PH"
Designed by Neric Beltran, Maricel's look was a reference to her 1992 romance film Ikaw Pa Lang Ang Minahal. The actress was in head-to-toe red for a pivotal scene in the movie, where she crashed her own wedding and left her leading man Richard Gomez in disbelief.
In an exclusive interview with Preview, Neric says that it was primarily his idea for Maricel to recreate the look. "When I was told about her guesting in the show, I suggested to recreate an iconic look from any of her movies. Ikaw Pa Lang Ang Minahal in particular was my favorite," he narrates. The designer adds that the Diamond Star's fans would immediately be able to recognize the look. "I know the gays will like the idea," he states, "because she’s [our] original ' inay.'"
Neric had a two weeks to complete the garment. He replicated the delicate appearance of her original outfit, using crepe for the dress and piling on the monochromatic floral appliques and sequins. This is Drag Race, after all. The more sparkle, the better!
We sure love a throwback! You always look on point, Maricel!
