Barbie world domination has officially commenced with the live-action film finally hitting theaters. At the helm of it as the quintessential doll herself is Margot Robbie, who's been serving look after look for the movie's press tour. She's taken Barbiecore to the next level, influencing many stylistas to embrace the pink-tastic agenda.
Fun fact: Even the film's official trailer sent fans into a frenzy looking for the exact—or at least similar—pieces Barbie wore. Business Insider reports that searches for "fluffy mules" spiked up by 115% after the main character stepped out of them in the (already iconic) opening scene.
One of Barbie's first outfits in the movie was a gingham dress, which also became a hot item for potential shoppers, garnering at least a 45% increase in search volume.
Meanwhile, pink bags experienced a 43% spike in interest after Margot was seen donning them for her pink carpet appearances. In general, high-end reseller site Lyst states that pink clothing gained more popularity by 78% during this time.
Morgane Speed, content editor of Lyst, attests to the doll's undeniable impact on consumers' behavior. "Through the rise of the Barbiecore aesthetic on TikTok and fashion lovers' recent obsession with all things hot pink, the iconic doll has developed an uncanny ability to shift retail trends," they state.
Morgane adds that "Barbie has become the undeniable style muse of the past year." And we're all for it! Life in plastic is indeed fantastic!
Barbie premieres in Philippine theaters on July 19, 2023.
