Preview Exclusive: How Luminary Model Management Is Changing the Game for Filipino Models

What inspired you to establish Luminary Model Management in 2019, and how did your individual experiences shape the agency’s vision?

Diego: "Being in the modeling industry for almost 15 years, I witnessed a recurring gap: the need for an agency that truly prioritizes hands-on talent development while providing comprehensive, 360-degree career management. Throughout my career, I felt this gap firsthand and realized the industry often lacked a personalized approach to nurturing talent. This inspired me to take action and create the change I wanted to see—a place where models receive not just representation, but mentorship, guidance, and the tools to thrive in the ever-evolving fashion industry."

For Diego, you mentioned filling a gap in the industry with a hands-on, personalized
approach. Can you elaborate on what these gaps were and how Luminary addresses them?

Diego: "One of the biggest issues in the industry is the 'cookie-cutter approach' many agencies adopt when managing talent. At Luminary, we believe every model is unique, and that uniqueness deserves a tailored approach. From personalized career planning and creative direction to individual branding strategies, we work closely with each model to highlight their strengths and address any challenges. For instance, we identify areas for growth—whether that’s refining runway skills or building confidence in front of the camera—and [provide] tools and support to help them excel. By nurturing their individuality and fostering their potential, we aim to build sustainable careers for our talents while helping them achieve their personal and professional best."

Nina, as the Creative Director, how do you ensure that Luminary’s models represent the agency’s artistic vision and ethos authentically?

Nina: "At Luminary, we seek out individuals who not only have the physical attributes of a model—such as meeting height requirements or having striking bone structure—but also embody the essence of what it means to be a “Luminary.” According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a luminary is “a person of influence or brilliant achievement.” This perfectly aligns with our vision. We look for talents who leave a lasting impression, possess a unique spark, and are unapologetically themselves. Beyond appearances, we value having persistence, gratitude, and faith. These qualities reflect the ethos of Luminary and allow our models to represent the agency’s vision authentically, not just in their work but in their presence and attitude in the industry."

What does your holistic approach to model development entail?

Nina: "At Luminary, our holistic approach to model development means addressing every aspect of a model’s career and personal growth. This begins with working on their personal branding and professional knowledge, helping them define a unique identity and voice in the industry while understanding the expectations and dynamics of the modeling world. We train them to be professional—teaching them how to navigate castings, handle contracts, and build strong relationships within the industry. We also prioritize refining and developing their skills while addressing areas for growth, ensuring they feel prepared for the demands of the profession. Beyond this, we focus on their overall well-being. Modeling can be a challenging career, so we provide resources and guidance to help maintain mental and physical balance."

"Ultimately, our goal is to nurture not just successful models but well-rounded individuals. By empowering them with confidence, knowledge, and skills, we help them thrive both personally and professionally, creating a sustainable and fulfilling career path."

You’ve mentioned that persistence, gratitude, and faith are central to your agency’s culture. How do these values manifest in the day-to-day operations of Luminary?

Diego: "At Luminary, persistence, gratitude, and faith guide everything we do. On a daily basis, my team and I dedicate ourselves to three key areas: local bookings, strategy & development, and international placements. For bookings, we consistently present our talents to local clients, ensuring they have opportunities to secure jobs, gain experience, and grow their careers. For strategy and development, we focus on long-term plans for our models’ growth—this includes organizing mentorship sessions, facilitating workshops, or curating portfolio shoots to showcase their unique potential. With international placements, we connect our models with agencies in different countries,
acquiring modeling contracts that give them the opportunity to work in the global market and broaden their career horizons."

"Faith plays an integral role in our journey. We trust in God to provide opportunities and open doors, even in the face of challenges. For every milestone, whether it’s a major achievement like landing a top magazine cover or something simpler like onboarding a new client, we remain deeply grateful. Gratitude also extends to the people who make our work possible—the models who trust us with their representation and the clients who believe in the talent we bring to the table. Persistence fuels our daily efforts, faith keeps us grounded and optimistic, and gratitude reminds us to celebrate both the big wins and the small ones. These values aren’t just principles; they are the foundation of our agency’s culture and the reason we continue to grow and succeed."

What challenges did you face during the early years of building Luminary, and how did you overcome them?

Diego: "In the early years, we faced the challenge of establishing ourselves in a competitive industry, starting as a mother agency for international placements in 2019 and later launching our local division in the Philippines in 2021. Building credibility and earning the trust of models, clients, and industry leaders required persistence and consistency. Like any start-up, we encountered learning curves in improving our operations and refining our business management skills. From streamlining our processes to enhancing our approach to talent development and client relations, we embraced these challenges as opportunities to grow."

Nina: "Additionally, we learned that creating a distinctive brand identity in a saturated market was key—we achieved this by prioritizing tailored strategies for our models, making them feel supported, and delivering quality service to clients through attention to detail, professionalism, and a commitment to meeting their needs."

What advice would you give to aspiring models who dream of building a sustainable career in the fashion industry?

Diego: "To aspiring models, my advice is to stay determined, disciplined, and patient. Building a sustainable career takes time, so focus on developing your craft and improving yourself. Stay grounded, be open to constructive criticism, and continuously seek opportunities to grow and improve."

"It’s also essential to understand the business side of modeling. Educate yourself on contracts, industry expectations, and how to present yourself professionally. Build strong relationships with people in the industry, maintain a positive reputation, and never underestimate the value of professionalism and decorum."

"Lastly, take care of your overall well-being—modeling is demanding, and your physical and mental health are key to longevity in the industry. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and have your best interests at heart. Remember, success isn’t just about booking jobs but creating a career that aligns with your values and allows you to grow as an individual. Stay true to yourself, work hard, trust in God, and stay motivated throughout your journey."
