When it comes to K-dramas, time travel is tried and tested–but they’ll often have their unique takes on the classic trope. And if phone booths and portals are a fantasy and sci-fi staple, the buzzed-about Lovely Runner has its own device to journey through timelines: a handy-dandy wristwatch, which viewers can actually buy for themselves (Time-traveling powers not included!).
How Does Time Travel Work in “Lovely Runner”?
In Lovely Runner, Byeon Woo Seok fills the shoes of Ryu Seon-jae, a Korean idol with a seemingly perfect life in the eyes of his adoring fans. Among the members of his devoted fanbase is Kim Hye Yoon’s Im Sol, an aspiring film director who finds comfort in Seon-jae’s work after being left paralyzed by an accident.
Things, however, take a turn when Sol finds out that Seon-jae has ended his own life. Hastened outside, Sol brings her treasured wristwatch from Seon-jae, which she accidentally drops into a river in her state of grief. It’s during this moment that Seon-jae is declared dead, prompting the watch to mysteriously light up.
After finding the watch and the subsequent confirmation of Seon-jae’s death, a heartbroken Sol weeps by the river, pressing the watch’s side buttons. Unbeknownst to her, this further activates the magical wristwatch, as she wakes up 15 years younger when a pre-debut Seon-jae still attended her neighboring school. Throughout the series, Sol is handed the opportunity to change Seon-jae’s fate, zipping to and from the past and present to see the effects and consequences of her actions.
