If you’ve spent any time knee-deep into the Y2K fashion archives, you’ll know that Louis Vuitton’s multicolor monogram was a definitive motif of the early 2000s. Drenched across iconic pieces like the Pochette and Speedy bags, the design was the result of the maison’s 2003 collaboration with renowned Japanese artist Takashi Murakami.
Two decades down the line, Louis Vuitton once again joined forces with the contemporary artist to reimagine and inject color into the house’s current line of offerings. This 200-piece collection breathes new life into the brand’s contemporary offerings, spanning shoes, leather goods, trunks, and even fragrances.
Unveiled in late December 2024 with a campaign fronted by Hollywood star Zendaya, the collection officially hit boutiques worldwide on January 1, 2025. Below, we break down everything you need to know about the collection, including standout pieces from this nostalgic lineup.
A Brief History of Louis Vuitton’s Past Collaborations with Takashi Murakami
In 2002, then-creative director Marc Jacobs tapped Takashi Murakami to add a playful twist to Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2003 collection. The collaboration transformed the maison’s classic handbags, debuting a multicolor monogram print alongside cherry blossom and “Eye Love” motifs. Models strutted the Paris runway carrying vibrant reinterpretations of the house’s classics like the Speedy, Keepall, and Papillon.
This creative partnership quickly became a pop culture phenomenon. Early 2000s icons such as Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian flaunted the bags, which reportedly brought in $300 million (around P17.4 billion) in revenue within a year since its release.

By 2004, Louis Vuitton launched another collaboration with Murakami. This time, designs also included the artist’s anime Panda print, emblazoned on the house’s lineup of bags, which now included the it-girl favorite Pochette. In fact, it even made an appearance on the cult-favorite film Mean Girls, worn by resident queen bee Regina George (Rachel McAdams).

For Spring/Summer 2005, Louis Vuitton debuted a new Murakami design: the Cerises, or Cherry print. This playful pattern adorned iconic styles such as the Speedy, Pochette, Keepall, and Petit Bucket.
The following year, Murakami and then-creative director Marc Jacobs elevated the multicolor motif even further. For the Spring/Summer 2006 collection, they introduced a new look for the Speedy bag by incorporating striking details like a vibrant rainbow fringe, glass beads, and crystal pendants.

In the years that followed, Louis Vuitton consistently collaborated with Murakami, season after season. However, these partnerships came to an end shortly after Marc Jacobs’ exit as creative director in 2014, with the maison officially discontinuing its collaborations with the Japanese artist by 2015.
About the Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami 2025 Re-Edition
A decade after their last collaboration, Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami rekindled their partnership with a collection that pays homage to their shared history. Commemorating 20 years since their debut, the re-edition features an expansive 200-piece lineup, including handbags, belts, scarves, wallets, and even skateboards and fragrance bottles.

Unified by Murakami’s unmistakable designs, the collection brings back beloved motifs like the Multicolore Monogram, Cherry Blossom, Superflat Panda, and Garden, and his signature smiley flowers. In a press release, the artist reflected on the collaboration’s enduring legacy:
“From 20 years ago, I was thinking about what it would be like now and tried to convey a message to the children in the hopes that they’d love my collaboration. I hope these cute characters will still be cherished 20 or 30 years from now,” Murakami shared.

Similarly, its ageless and transgenerational appeal was the ethos that grounded this year’s re-issue of the collection. "The creative bond between Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami continues to transcend both time and stylistic trends, while crossing generations and communities across the world, and offering creations to be collected and cherished - yesterday, today, and forever," the brand expressed through a press statement.
Pieces from the collection officially hit Louis Vuitton boutiques worldwide beginning January 1, 2025. In March 2025, the house is set to launch “a second chapter” to the collection, unveiling creations with Murakami’s Cherry Blossom designs, perfect in time for the spring season.
