We all feel a little nervous about the unconventional—it's unfamiliar territory, after all. But sometimes, that leap into the unknown leads to something great. That’s exactly what happened with the young designer Latisha Tan, who once dreamed of following the traditional path of becoming a surgeon. Yet, somewhere along the way, she realized her true passion wasn’t in the operating room, but in the world of fashion.

Did you always know that you wanted to be a fashion designer? When did your interest in fashion start?

"I actually originally dreamed of becoming a surgeon like my father, who I’ve always looked up to. Growing up, though, I’ve asked myself whether this dream is rooted in my desire to follow in his footsteps or simply because I was afraid to fully embrace my purpose in fashion, given the misconception of its career landscape in the country back then."

"What I did know was that my love for fashion has always been present even as a kid—from coordinating my family’s outfits to saving up to buy fashion books, and even to watching DIY sewing videos on YouTube. When I stepped into my senior high school years, I came to realize that the dream planted in my heart had a purpose. This led me to the decision to study fashion design, which has been one of the best decisions I have ever made."

How would you personally describe your designs? What kind of person would be seen wearing them?

"I would say my creations are unique, elegant, and feminine all at the same time. They’re out-of-the-ordinary statement pieces and conversation starters. Growing up, there would be certain moments when I was tempted to mellow down my looks to conform to society’s norms. I don't want anyone to feel this, which is why I drew inspiration from this experience when I started By Latisha.

"By Latisha was made for the muses who are unafraid to embrace their uniqueness and femininity, who are unafraid to stand out—whether they’re out every day or celebrating a special day and event."

What are the main inspirations you pull from when creating your designs? Can you walk us through your thought process when designing?

"I always draw inspiration from my realizations, reflections, and emotions at the time of designing. I believe fashion pieces are designed to convey messages words are sometimes unable to. For instance, my recent ready-to-wear collection was designed and named The Everyday because I was reflecting on the beauty of [daily life], and how there are times we may take the days for granted. I want the pieces I’ve designed to reflect the beauty of what I’ve learned at that certain point in my life. All while, of course, combining it with the muse’s needs and wants."

Is there one rule or value you always stick to when making your creations? What pushes you to keep pursuing your craft?

"When designing and creating, my rule of thumb is to never veer away from my personal identity, aesthetic, and vision. There must always be a By Latisha touch or element one could recognize at a glance. At the same time, I believe it is my duty as a designer to make sure each piece has its own unique and one-of-a-kind look designed for the muse."

"Every time I meet a client, I don’t just create pieces for them. We exchange impactful stories and conversationsabout life, faith, and such. At the end of the day, my craft that helps my muses feel extra beautiful encompasses the different aspects of our lives. This, I believe, pushes me to give my very best."

What’s your message to your fellow young designers?

"I’m a firm believer that God has given us this passion for a reason. Let’s stay true to our aesthetic and vision as designers and let our creations inspire others. Not everyone will be pleased with our designs, but there will always be more people who believe and love what we do—and that’s what matters."
