Kim Kardashian's appearance at the  LACMA Art + Film Gala has been the subject of online criticism as of late. Netizens on X (formerly Twitter), in particular, weren't too happy with the American socialite's choice of attire.

At the event held last November 2, Hollywood's elite gathered at the famed Los Angeles County Museum for Art (LACMA), clad in sophisticated ensembles for an evening of glamour. Among the celebrities present at the event was Kim Kardashian, who arrived garbed in a white custom Gucci gown, a sultry look that featured a daring plunging neckline and form-fitting maxi skirt.

Her look was accentuated by a statement piece—a rare amethyst cross necklace once owned by Princess Diana. Kim reportedly acquired the piece at a Sotheby’s auction back in January 2023 for nearly $200,000 or about P1.1 million, double its pre-auction estimate. This historical piece was last seen on the late British royal during a charity event in 1987 when she paired it with a Victorian-inspired purple gown.

For the 2024 LACMA Art + Film Gala, however, Kim opted for her own interpretation, styling the cross pendant on a shortened chain so that it rested prominently against her bare chest. She complemented the necklace with stacks of silver and pearl-embellished chokers, adding her personal twist to the vintage piece.

While Kim’s ensemble certainly turned heads, not all viewers were impressed by her red carpet look. Critics on social media argued that her pairing of the iconic necklace with a revealing dress was inappropriate and disrespectful. “I know her point was to highlight the necklace but I wish she would have worn it with a dress [with] less cleavage," commented one user on X. Another netizen echoed this, stating, "The necklace deserves more respect than being used as just another fashion accessory."

Kim’s fascination with vintage celebrity pieces has been evident over the years. After all, she previously made headlines for wearing Marilyn Monroe’s 1962 dress to the 2022 Met Gala. As such, her recurring choice to showcase archival pieces has left some questioning her motives. "I think she uses these archival pieces as a way to legitimize herself to herself given how she entered the public sphere," a netizen observed. Another user chimed in, saying, "It seems that Kim Kardashian thinks it makes sense to superficially leverage their stories and mystique for her benefit."

Nonetheless, not everyone saw an issue with Kim’s choice, however. Some defended her, noting she has every right to wear the necklace as she pleases. "She bought it, she can rock it however she wants," one user stated.
