All eyes were once again on the British Royal Family as King Charles III was crowned last May 6. A significant royal event like this is always a feast for the days, especially when all the pomp and pageantry requires everyone in attendance to be in their best dressed. A duo particularly worthy of the title were Kate Middleton and her eight-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte.
Seated front row alongside Prince William and their youngest, Prince Louis, the mother-daughter tandem stood out in matching ensembles, starting from their floral headpieces. The accessories, made in collaboration with Alexander McQueen and Jess Collett, featured crystals, silver bullion, and 3D leaf embroidery. The media speculates that Kate chose a flower crown in place of her usual tiaras in cooperation with the king's wish for a more "scaled-back" coronation.
Also at the request of the new king and queen, Kate (and William) sported a formal robe and mantle over her ivory silk crepe gown, also designed by Alexander McQueen. The gown was embroidered with elements of rose, thistle, daffodil, and shamrock to represent the four nations that make up the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
The symbolics don’t end with her clothes either. As per a royal press release, Kate managed to pay homage to the late Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II with her jewels. The Princess of Wales had on the South Sea Pearl Earrings that were once Princess Diana’s, paired with a three-strand diamond necklace that belonged in Queen Elizabeth’s collection.
Princess Charlotte, on the other hand, was a spitting image of her mother, in a similar ivory frock by McQueen. Except where Kate finished her look with pointed-toe heels, the Princess opted for a pair of Mary Janes that went perfectly with her white cape and dress. Side-by-side, the two definitely stole the show where the fashion-inclined are concerned.
Alexander McQueen has often been Kate’s favored designer as she’s frequently seen in the British label’s pieces on royal engagements. Last year, the princess wore three McQueen dresses for a portrait session to celebrate her 40th birthday, of which were then passed on to the National Portrait Gallery.
