Would you risk a stable paycheck in pursuit of a higher calling? Back in 2019, Joanna Pojas found herself at a crossroads when she got accepted into the esteemed Professional Models Association of the Philippines (PMAP). The opportunity beckoned the then-22-year-old to actively embark on the modeling route, devote her time and energy full-time to the craft, and even tender her resignation from her corporate job.

Almost five years later, the now 26-year-old lives to tell the tale to Preview. Read our exclusive interview below!

Meet PMAP Model Joanna Pojas

Joanna attributes the origins of her career to her friends encouraging her to join her school's modeling competition. Needless to say, she won and earned the chance to walk for fashion designer Carl Arcusa

The experience left her smitten with the modeling world, leaving her the desire to immerse in it further. More importantly, she began seeing the spark that other people saw in her. "Inspired by the many encouragements I often receive, I started to gain interest in modeling. In my mind, I believed that my gifts were God-given and should be used for a purpose," she recounts.

How Joanna started as a model might seem serendipitous, but behind every lucky windfall is a girl pushing herself out off her comfort zone and boldly taking risks—exchanging the corporate grind for freelancing, included. "When I got into PMAP, I decided to resign from my corporate job and focus my time on developing my talents," she narrates.

While fortune might favor the brave, it offers no promises of leaving you unscathed. "You could say modeling cannot offer stability," she reveals, citing the irregularity of bookings, "It’s a constant battle between doing something I’m very passionate about and pursuing something that I’m able to do long term that offers more stability."

But even so, there are no regrets as she believes she is living out a dream and that she is right where she's supposed to be. Her passion for the craft is immensely palpable as she gushes about the different kinds of modeling gigs and the creatives she works with. With Joanna's infectious positivity, you can't help but root for her as she steadily ticks off milestones.

How did you get your start in the modeling industry? Tell us the story of how you got “discovered.”

"We had a university-wide modeling competition way back in 2018. My friends pushed me to join, so I did, and I am so glad I won! As a prize for being the University’s Next Top Model, I had the privilege of taking part in a real fashion show, one that showcases the Avante Garde collection of Carl Arcusa. Being my first runway show, and having no knowledge or experience whatsoever, I really felt elated. It was all exhilarating!"

How long have you been a model and what do you love the most about it?

"I’ve been a professional model for almost five years now, and I love every moment of it. Each work I do is always different. It’s not just the outcome (lookbook, billboard, magazine, TVC, etc.) that is different—the whole experience from hair and makeup, to the styling, and the actual photo shoot is truly enriching. I get to make new friends and I learn new styles and techniques so I can be better in what I do."

Would you say being a model is your dream job? Why or why not?

"I know I am where I am supposed to be. For me, whatever we do, as long as we give our best and love what we do, it is a dream fulfilled."

What was the biggest struggle you’ve faced in the modeling industry and how did you overcome it?

"It’s not every day or even every week that I get booked for a job. You could say modeling cannot offer stability. But, from time to time, I bake! I’m thankful that I get to do both of the things I love. And can I just say that if you really love what you’re doing, it doesn’t feel like you’re working at all."

What would you say is the most memorable project you’ve done as a model so far?

"Every work is memorable. But the most unforgettable one would be The Impalpable Dream of España by Michael Cinco! Everything was to perfection! The production, art direction, models, and most importantly, the ensembles were all excellently executed! I am so honored to be part of one of the best, if not the best, runway shows."

What’s something unique about you that sets you apart from all other models?

"I know that each one of us is unique and special in our own way. When I work, I keep in my mind that the success of the project is the result of each team member’s contribution. So I try to be mindful of others and I try to exude positivity. I am a work in progress, but I try to be kind and respectful whenever I can."

In your own opinion, what are the characteristics of a great model?

"Being able to bring to life the creations of the designer, portraying beauty and essence in the products being promoted, being able to attract consumer interest are just some of the characteristics of a great model. Of course, good work ethics is a must."

What’s your advice to aspiring models?

"Each one of us has a gift–a gift meant to be utilized and shared. Believe in yourself and have the courage to do the thing you can do. If things do not work out the way you hoped it would, continue to believe that all things will work out for the best."
