Entering the fashion industry as the new Editor-In-Chief of American Vogue, Anna Wintour broke all the rules and veered away from the ornateness the magazine was known for when she put a jean-clad Michaela Bercu on the cover in 1988. It was the year that celebrated voluminous hair, bright and vibrant colours, and oversized silhouettes. So it was no surprise when the cover proved to be polarizing–people either loved it or hated it. It was a high-low play on couture and street fashion: A heavily beaded Christian Lacroix jacket was daringly paired with stonewashed Guess jeans.
What was then a controversial piece steadily became a staple and an unbeatable must-have in everyone’s closet. Denim jeans figure into many a chic ‘fit, as well as edgy streetwear looks we save on Pinterest. A pair of denim jeans—specifically a high-waisted one—won’t fail anyone, ever. All that said, it's time to pick up your trusty pair because they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

Below, we've rounded up 10 local style girls who've charted how to wear the timeless staple. Take a look:
1. Jane Oineza: Cropped Denim Jeans + Cropped Top + Stilettos
We all know the saying “less is more”—and now we’ve got Jane Oineza showing us just how to do it. She keeps it fresh with a simple bralette top, but her cropped jeans with the distressed hem are no doubt the 'fit's show-stopper.

2. Elisse Joson: Vibrant Blazer + Striped Top + Medium Wash Jeans + Platforms
Elisse Joson isn’t shy to mix and match her colours, and we're totally going to apply that same spirit when styling our denim. We know that orange and blue are complementary colors, and she went ahead and spiced up the look even further with a brightly-textured coat. Her yellow platforms matched the energy of the coat while the white crossbody bag balanced the bright hues of the ‘fit.
Denim isn’t new in the streetwear game, and Kathryn Bernardokept it clean and laid-back. She elevated the simple white graphic tee with a pair of light-washed jeans, but her ‘fit went from chill to edgy when she slipped on the round, amber-tinted shades.

4. Bela Padilla: Bodysuit + Mom Jeans + Sneakers
When it comes to chic and easy, we can count on Bela Padilla for some style inspo. Sticking to a Parisian-style silhouette, she donned a tight bodysuit that complemented the loose and flared style of her jeans. Plus, she kept it young and fresh with her CDG shoes and a Louis Vuitton sling bag.
On a lighter note, (pun intended) Faye Balogo shows us why we should pick up a pair of pale, light-washed jeans. The classic tucked white tee and jeans combo was elevated with a minimalist cream coloured vest that made ‘fit go from simple to chic. Faye complimented the white and cream motif with a latte-hued bag and some casual sandals.

6. Angelique Manto: Leatherette Bustier Top + Ripped Medium Wash Jeans + Sandals
A bold and heavy piece such as the bustier top might make it hard to wear on a casual day, but Angelique Manto seems to have mastered toning it down. Her loose denim jeans balanced with the silver hoops paired well with her top. She topped off the outfit with a black cap and heeled sandals. And for some of us who prefer not to show as much skin, opt to layer on a white button-down for that effortless, natural look.

Florals are known for their light and pastel colours, but Maris Racal introduced a new take. 8. Toni Sia: Tight Top + Ripped Mom Jeans + Stacked Necklaces + Sneakers + Mini Purse
It’s a play with denim! Toni Sia showed us that denim on denim can be worn sans jacket. She teamed a deconstructed denim top in brighter hue of blue with a pair of desaturated ripped jeans—presumably throwing back to that early 2000s aesthetic. Plus, she accessorized with stacked silver necklaces, which complement the buckle detail on her crop top. Finally, her bright green purse added a pop of colour that elevated the look.
