It’s a crowd favorite among the “old money rich” folk.

Oftentimes, when we think of Hermès bags, the Birkin and Kelly immediately come to mind. After all, many find themselves playing the fabled "Hermès game" to obtain these highly coveted leather goods. But unbeknown to many, there's another capacious bag that continues to capture the hearts (and wallets) of many Hermès patrons: the Lindy bag.

Nicknamed as the "toaster bag," the Lindy takes on a boxy yet slouched silhouette, wth both a twist-lock and double zip closure. Its most striking feature? The two top handles, which are uniquely placed by the gussets. Understated and timeless on its own, the Lindy also offers a multitude of styling options, thanks to the detachable long shoulder strap that can be attached to the tubular handles.

If you've been thinking about splurging on an Hermès Lindy, you've come to the right place. Ahead, we give a rundown on everything you need to know about the understated, cubic carryall that style aficionados have come to love. Read on.

What Is the Hermes Lindy Bag?

Brought to life by iconic French designer Jean Paul Gaultier in 2006, the house's creative director at the time, the Hermès Lindy debuted during the house's Spring/Summer 2007 showcase. Initially presented in light pastel pink and burnt orange hues, the handbag has since become a fixture at Hermès' succeeding runways and, by effect, at its boutiques worldwide.

The Lindy's original design is credited to Frédéric Vidal, whose idea aimed to serve a practical and ergonomic purpose. At the time, he noticed that wearers often face a certain level of discomfort when carrying a top handle bag. Frédéric noted that people had to stretch out their arms to keep the bag parallel or adjacent to their body, which naturally strained the shoulders and forearms throughout the day. With the Lindy's design, the house of Hermès sought to offer a more functional solution to these sartorial woes. The fix? The two tubular top handles, strategically placed by the bag's gussets.

Unlike most handbags, the handles are placed at the bag's two rear ends, which allows you to comfortably slip your arms through, effectively placing the accessory at a more perpendicular—and thereby more natural—position.

To further maximize its functional design, each Lindy bag comes with a detachable, long shoulder strap, allowing you to wear it as a crossbody or shoulder bag.

Patrons of the high luxury brand have also described it as the perfect travel bag, thanks to its generous interior and two exterior slip pockets, discreetly situated below the side handles.

The bag's closure mechanisms further enhances to its ease of use. The clous de selle twist-locksecures the front flap, with a metal-finish clasp positioned at the center of the facade. Additionally, the Lindy features a double zip closure along the upper edges. Within it reveals a spacious, cubic interior for easy access to your belongings. Practical, stylish, and an understated classic—what’s not to love?

How Much Are Hermes Lindy Bags?

The Hermès Lindy has been produced in a variety of sizes, colors, and leather materials, reflecting the house's commitment to artisanal craftsmanship and timeless sophistication.

According to the official Hermès website, the French luxury fashion house currently offers the boxy top handle in four sizes: 20cm (the mini), 26cm, 30cm, and 34cm. Notably, the mini size has emerged as a crowd-favorite among Hermès shoppers. First introduced through the house's Fall/Winter 2019 collection, the mini Lindy has since become one of the most coveted bags from the maison, alongside Hermès' "big three"– the Birkin, Kelly, and Constance.  Naturally, as the laws of supply and demand would dictate, the Lindy 20 commands a hefty price tag, especially on resale.
