Brought to life by iconic French designer Jean Paul Gaultier in 2006, the house's creative director at the time, the Hermès Lindy debuted during the house's Spring/Summer 2007 showcase. The Lindy's original design is credited to Frédéric Vidal, whose idea aimed to serve a practical and ergonomic purpose. Frédéric noted that people had to stretch out their arms to keep the bag parallel or adjacent to their body, which naturally strained the shoulders and forearms throughout the day. With the Lindy's design, the house of Hermès sought to offer a more functional solution to these sartorial woes. The fix? The two tubular top handles, strategically placed by the bag's gussets.
Unlike most handbags, the handles are placed at the bag's two rear ends, which allows you to comfortably slip your arms through, effectively placing the accessory at a more perpendicular—and thereby more natural—position.
To further maximize its functional design, each Lindy bag comes with a detachable, long shoulder strap, allowing you to wear it as a crossbody or shoulder bag.
