When it comes to designer bags, you simply can't go wrong with Gucci. The Italian house produces some of the most sought-after arm candies that find themselves in the clutches of history's most stylish.
While we often associate Gucci and other high-brow brands with unadulterated luxury, some of their most iconic designs were actually born out of the need to compromise. Case in point: the Bamboo, a saddle-like handbag distinguished by its curved handle and turnlock closure made out of, you guessed it, bamboo.
What Is the Gucci Bamboo Bag?
Guccio Gucci had to address a pressing manufacturing problem in the late 1940s. After the second World War, Italy was facing a shortage in leather, which was the primary textile needed to craft their pieces. To resolve the issue, he decided to implement the use of bamboo, a durable and lightweight material that was easily importable from Japan, in creating the hardware for their bags. The result became a pleasant surprise addition to their products, and has since evolved into a symbol of Gucci's dedication to innovation.
With a round-bottomed shape inspired by bags used in equestrian activities, the Gucci Bamboo was a must-have for the likes of Liz Taylor and Grace Kelly. Even Princess Diana Spencer herself couldn't resist its charm and was often spotted clutching the Japanese wood as she donned her daily outfits. Though, she particularly preferred the less structured and more cavernous carriers rather than just the handbags. Practicality is king (or queen), we suppose.
The process of hand-manipulating, lacquering, and varnishing bamboo became one of Gucci's hallmarks for years to come. The painstaking method, which they had patented, FYI, is replicated with every piece they release up until today.
Almost seven decades after its inception, the bag experienced a rebirth care of the brand's former creative director Alessandro Michele. In February 2022, they rolled out a refreshed roster of the tote, with the year they were first conceived now attached to its name. The design pretty much stayed true to the original, save for a couple of new colorways and prints that reflect today's style sensibilities.
How Much Is the Gucci Bamboo Bag?
As mentioned, the chic carrier now comes in various hues and textiles, with sizes ranging from mini to medium. The standard leather ones fetch for about P250,000, while versions rendered in delicate reptilian skin can set you back for more than three million pesos! Each piece comes with a detachable strap for a hands-free crossbody experience, which was an addition that Alessandro introduced to the mix.

The revamped model is relatively pricier at about P290,000, give or take, but is perfect if you need a little sass to your looks.
