When it comes to the fashion industry, the will to experiment is a must for any budding model. Gabbie Abesamis—a member of the Professional Models Association of the Philippines (PMAP)—knows this perfectly well, with a portfolio that seems unafraid to get “crazy,” in her own words.
Since her start in 2015, the 27-year-old model with her unique affable countenance has graced glossies and the like, including the pages of Preview’s September 2017 issue. Fast-forward to the present, and Gabbie is re-introduced in the digital era with her recent appearance in Preview’s Best Filipino Fashion Designers 2023, decked out in a colorful Randolf ensemble.

How did you get your start in the modeling industry? Tell us the story of how you got “discovered.”
“During my college PE at UP Diliman, one of the Taekwondo varsity players was a clothing tech student who needed a last-minute model for their thesis show since her model backed out. She was asking our coach for suggestions, and he pointed to me since I was quite slim and tall.
“From there, I experienced my first show and made some friends, too! It was super fun and exciting. I later joined PMAP.”

How long have you been a model and what do you love the most about it?
“I've been modeling since 2015, but it was an on-and-off situation since I was busy with school and work. But I try to join modeling events whenever possible.
“Truthfully, I’m a very shy and awkward person, but thanks to modeling, I slowly learned how to open myself up and gain more confidence. Being surrounded by beautiful people who have such a positive vibe about them really rubs off on you.”

Would you say being a model is your dream job? Why or why not?
“I wouldn't really say it is, since my dream is actually opening a pet store one day. [laughs] But I’d say modeling has become a dream opportunity. I wasn't always the most confident person growing up, so it was a real turn of events when I started modeling–it kinda feels like a Cinderella story!
“But when I think about it, the experiences I was able to go through so far in the world of modeling are like a dream in itself. Never in my life did I expect I’d be able to join the things I have.”

What was the biggest struggle you’ve faced in the modeling industry and how did you overcome it?
“Sometimes, I don't know how to talk to people. Many people in the fashion industry look very mataray, so I'd get nervous sometimes. But over time, I learned that the majority of them are super nice, and that they just have an intimidating presence about them. But if you just smile and stay cheerful, it’ll be fine! [laughs]”
What would you say is the most memorable project you’ve done as a model so far?
“It would probably be the Preview feature I did back in 2017. It came out so well that I always feel proud whenever I look at it. It's so dynamic and fun. I really enjoy shoots like that.”

How do you see your career progressing in the future? Do you have a dream modeling gig?
“My dream modeling gig would 100 percent have to be a Uniqlo photoshoot and have it on their store or an ad. I don't know, but I've always dreamed of being in those small photos above the clothing racks! [laughs]”
What’s something unique about you that sets you apart from all other models?
“I have a very girl-next-door type of look to me, but at the same time, I’m also game for exploring some very artistic and unusual fashion. Actually, I really enjoy those high fashion types of shoots with crazy makeup and hair, so I'm open to exploring very creative types of projects. I enjoy being a canvas for the team to work with.”

What’s your go-to model-off-duty look?
“My usual outfit would have to be a body-fitting midi dress with chunky sandals and quirky statement bags.”
In your own opinion, what are the characteristics of a great model?
“A great model has to be professional, but at the same time open-minded. You have to know that you aren’t the star of the show, you’re just the canvas for the whole creative team behind the scenes.
“Besides the modeling skills, a great model truly respects the work that goes into each and everything put on them. They’re respectful to the team, they are professional with everyone’s time and effort, and they don’t act like a rude diva because again, you’re part of the team. The team isn't doing it for you–they’re doing it for themselves. So it’s best to be a team player and do your best to produce a good result for everyone.”

What’s your advice to aspiring models?
“For aspiring models, the best thing to get started is to collaborate with photographers and build your portfolio. But be careful, because there are perverts out there who may take advantage of you, so choose wisely!

“Collaborate and collaborate until you have a good range of photo styles like some portraits, full bodies, snapshots, and the like. Once you have those, prepare a professional-looking set card and try applying to agencies or join castings if ever you hear about auditions.

“For your set card, never ever print it on bond paper! Use thick card stock paper with a matte finish. When you go to castings, never wear platform heels, and make sure to wear clean and presentable clothes.
“Also, know what kind of modeling you want to do, because there are different kinds—including fashion model, pageant model, commercial model, athletic model, and more!”
