The Filipino Footwear Design Competition is back for its 9th edition in an inspiring showcase of creativity, culture, and craftsmanship. Organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in collaboration with the Philippine Footwear Federation Inc. (PFFI) and co-presented by the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), this year's competition not only celebrates the art of shoemaking but also aims to nurture the next generation of Filipino shoe designers.
The stakes were high as the winning designer earned the opportunity to represent the Philippines at the prestigious International Footwear Design Competition (IFDC) in Guangzhou, China. Guiding the designers on their creative journey were key opinion leaders in the Philippine shoe industry. Maco Custodio, a seasoned entrepreneur and designer, Unyx Sta. Ana, the visionary founder of Zapateria Hub, and Tal De Guzman, an esteemed educator and CEO of Risque Design, lent their expertise to the finalists, enriching their designs with industry wisdom.
An esteemed panel of jurors, including Levenson Rodriguez, Patrick Lazol, Twinkle Samson Carrissa Evangelista, Gina Nebrida-Ty, Dir. Julius L. Leano Jr., Ph.D., Ma. Sofia G Narag, CESO V, Jojo Bragais, Lyn Alumno, and Preview’s very own Editor-in-Chief, Marj Ramos-Clemente, meticulously evaluated each design, ensuring that only the best would take the spotlight.
Each of the nine designers brought forth a unique narrative, inspired by the rich tapestry of Filipino culture. Ultimately, Ritche Rodulfo's Maria Clara De Filipiniana shoe, which showcases an aristocratic version of the Baro't Saya, took home the prize and was named the grand winner.

1. Bagong Bukas by Ira Louise Cayanan
A poetic embodiment of overcoming challenges, this design drew inspiration from natural materials and handmade techniques, reflecting the non-linear progress of personal growth.
2. Ligum Dulom by Chad Gabrielle Tanutan
In the spirit of hope emerging from darkness, this shoe, translating to "surrounded by darkness," symbolizes the strength to break free from personal struggles, finding a glimmer of light even in the darkest times.
3. Ahon by Reymart Dellomas
Melding style with cultural heritage, Ahon paid homage to the Philippines' Mountain Province, featuring intricate Batok tattoos and the breathtaking Banaue rice terraces.
4. Rambo by Ivan Fabia
Awarded for its compelling storytelling, Rambo served as a tribute to one of the worked and overloaded kalesa horses, reflecting the highs and lows of Philippine culture and heritage in Intramuros.
5. Bulawan by Lee Villanueva
Best in Construction winner, Bulawan celebrated the diverse cultural heritage of the Philippines, highlighting the significance of gold from pre-Hispanic times to the present day.
6. Dolzura by Gerald Farofaldane
In memory of the first publicly recognized AIDS patient in the Philippines, Dolzura Cortes, this shoe paid tribute to Filipino resilience and unity.
7. Tusok-Tusok by Ma. Daniella Louise Borrero
From street food to streetwear, Tusok-Tusok honored the Filipino culinary subculture of street food, reminding wearers of the rich and flavorful experiences embedded in their cultural identity.
8. Patok by Andrei Benedict Garcia
Drawing inspiration from the iconic Jeepney, Patok symbolized resilience and practical solutions, paying tribute to the challenges faced by Jeepney drivers amidst modernization.
9. Maria Clara De Filipiniana by Ritche Rodulfo
Being hailed as the Grand Winner and Zapateria Artisanry Award winner, this design was inspired by the Maria Clara Gown, showcasing an aristocratic version of the Baro't Saya, the Philippines' traditional dress.
