Only a few days left before we find out who will be crowned the next Miss Universe. In anticipation, we can’t help but wonder what gown would Rabiya Mateo will wear during the coronation night. Even before the preliminary evening gown aired, we went ahead and asked local designers and fellow Preview readers to sketch out their vision of a red carpet-worthy evening gown fit for our morena queen! A high-slit golden gown, embellished with pearls and a cape? Definitely one for Miss Universe!

“My dream evening gown for Rabiya Mateo is inspired by the legendary warrior princess, Urduja. Just like the warrior princess, I wanted to see Rabiya to be clad in gold to let her morena skin shine through.” He adds that this gown will be intricately detailed with gold rhinestones, swarovski crystals, and pearls to give that exquisite sparkle on stage.

Rajo Laurel indulged us with four beautiful gowns. The first one is yellow with a voluminous skirt and a ribbon at the back.
The second had an intricate sequin pattern on a plunging serpentina gown.
Third one is reminiscent of Bougainvillea flowers, with its puffy fuchsia sleeves.
The last one is a modern Filipina ensemble, inspired by the good old times.

Mara Chua designed a gorgeous gown with what seems to be inspired by the colors of the Aurora Borealis. The interesting cut-outs and the structured shoulder also gave the gown a powerful look!

Jozel Lignes was inspired by the color red, which was Rabiya’s answer when asked about what color she thinks symbolizes a phenomenal woman.

“I was enticed to create a modern Filipiniana gown inspired by our yellow sun and its solar flares because in our flag, it symbolizes unity, freedom, sovereignty, and democracy. Qualities that are needed at this time.”

“I chose an Earth tone color—rustic brown mixed in with gold threading—for her gown. From the plunging neckline and the cut-out illusions on the waist down to the hips, the cut is not complicated to rightfully show the features of Rabiya’s body. Linear radiant beading and texture of gown will also help elongate her physique.”

Venice Ventura sketched two gowns! The first one “I was inspired by the Philippine eagle which symbolizes strength, uniqueness, a love for freedom, and power of the Filipino people. I also added a symbol of love, devotion, purity, and divine hope through the incorporation of the Sampaguita flower in my design”
The second is in bright magenta. “Magenta is an instrument of change and transformation; it helps to release old emotional patterns that prevent personal and spiritual development and ais us in moving forward. Sheer tulle skirt embellished with swarovski crystal and organza petals inspired by Dahlia flowers which represents elegance, inner strength, change, and dignity.”

“I was inspired by a giant, dragon-like bird in Philippine legends which is the Minokawa. I was so into this creature because I feel like it’s unique and at the same time, this mythical creature lives in the universe which Rabiya was competing for…”
Briar even drew a National Costume design inspired Lapu-Lapu. “I was inspired by him because he left us the legacy of freedom. This costume would be fit for Rabiya because she once said that “Women are as capable as men in handling the nation.”

Ehrran Montoya designed an sheer empire yellow beaded high neck gown with a built in cape attached to the back. Its embellished gold beading details and halter off-shoulder sleeves was inspired by the ceiling of San Agustin church and pre-colonial treasures of Surigao.

Job Dacon was inspired by the works of Juan Luna, a famous Filipino painter. His first pattern exhibited “The Battle of Lepanto,” and the second was “The Blood Compact.”

“This gown is inspired by a very famous dish here in the Philippines, which is called Pancit Palabok, that has alot of joyful colors in it.”

“Inspired by the Kulintang of Maranaos and Hanan the goddess of morning, dawn, childbirth, and new beginnings. She is one of the three demigod daughters of Bathalang Maycapal to a mortal woman.”

“The whole gown is full of beadwork to show appreciation to the “bituin” or stars that are seen above us. The color palette is inspired by the colors of magma. These concepts show two contrasting ideas that can still look beautiful when they are strategically combined as one.”

Dominique Brandes created a green semi sheer sweetheart neckline gown with vertical flowing details and orchids. According to him, “This gown represents the entire island of the Philippines with its green healthy archipelago. A true Filipina can bring her entire country through her confidence, elegance, and compassion.”
