It's always exciting to see up-and-coming designers break the mold in Philippine fashion, and Jacqueline 'Jackie' Mones' brand The Jacque Label is doing just that. However, the 26-year-old never imagined herself in the fashion industry. Jackie's interest in design did not emerge until she was well into her adolescence. "My love for fashion began when I was in high school and began liking K-pop," she admits. This passion grew over time, culminating in a fashion degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and transforming it into a full-fledged career path.
Behind the designer
Jackie's work is best described as peculiar yet chic. Her signature style is defined by vibrant colors and maximalist silhouettes that are nothing short of eye-catching. When asked what inspired her to pursue eclectic designs, she credited renowned Fashion Designer Iris Van Herpen. “When I was in college, I saw one of her designs at a museum. I remember falling in love with it and been intrigued [about] how she made it. That's when I told myself I wanted to do avant-garde fashion too. [It became the] theme I did for my thesis fashion collection, and it branched out to what my fashion line is today.”
One can draw parallels between Iris' work and Jackie's use of varying textures and exaggerated proportions, but both are distinct in their own right. Her desire to create something unique is inspired by a mantra she keeps close to her heart. “As Nicki Minaj said, ‘Who wants to look simple when you can look stunning?’ So my rule is to make clothes that are out of the ordinary,” she explains.
Jackie pours her heart and soul into her work, which is primarily inspired by nature.
“I start with research [on] plants, architectures, animals, and insects, then I study upcoming silhouette, color, design, fabric, and pop culture trends to draw as many designs as possible, picking which ones I like best,” the budding designer explains.
Making it in the industry
Jackie, who is new to the industry, understands the value of consistency in honing one's craft. “You don't have to be the best at drawing or designing to pursue fashion,” she shares. “Everyone has their own imagination, [and] fashion is something you can learn, so just keep on practicing.”
When you're passionate about something, what distinguishes you from other creative minds is your determination to persevere, regardless of what others say. Knowing that her career path is unusual, Jackie recognizes that a thick skin is required to make it and stand out in the industry. “I think just pursue your dream, don't let people discourage you, don't let people dictate what you should do with your life.” Hear, hear Jackie!
