"She will forever be my muse," Fashion Design and Merchandising student Lance Rubio says of his mom. For one of his final requirements at the College of Saint Benilde, the aspiring designer decided to create a garment especially dedicated to the woman who raised him.
"Hindi naranasan ng aking nanay na magsuot ng wedding gown sa kanyang kasal. Ang kwento pa nya, Coke na raw ang pinaka handa nila nung araw na yon," he narrated in a tweet. Equipped with a wanting to fulfll his mother's "long overdue dream," he set out to craft the quintessential frock for her. The results, we say, are nothing short of stunning.
In an exclusive interview with Preview, Lance reveals how he designed the tribute piece, and what it meant for him and his muse.
Preview Exclusive: Fashion Student Lance Rubio on Creating a Wedding Dress for His Mom
The wedding dress, like in traditional couture shows, was the punctuation mark to an entire collection Lance had to put together for one of his majors. Inspired by the women in the small Isabela barrio he grew up in, he wanted to showcase a story with all of the looks, with the finale piece showcasing his gratitude to his mom.
Lance was very particular with the details and techniques he used to create the gown. "I [was] inspired by Balenciaga, especially [with] the neckline. I [wanted] to give [a] vintage vibe, like it would fit the time when my mom and dad got married," he tells Preview.
The dress itself was composed of a voluminous pleated skirt that was attached to a bustier adorned with glass beads and freshwater pearls. Aside from duchess satin and tulle, Lance actually made use of an upcycled old curtain to complete the piece.
The young designer was nothing but elated with the final outcome. With makeup done by Jam C. Liban, Lance's mom was positively glowing in the magnificient frock. "I cried while making a caption for the photos," he shares. "This is the most personal plate I ever made."
It was such a gorgeous piece, Lance, and with a heartwarming story to boot! Congrats!
