"Underwear is a basic human right," Isla Fisher as the spend-happy Rebecca Bloomwood solemnly declared in 2009's book-based flick Confessions of a Shopaholic, and though we absolutely do not recommend you bury yourself in terrifying credit card debt just to snag some La Perla, it's a nugget of sartorial wisdom to keep in mind. Lingerie is more than a necessity—often, the right undies play the silent heroes of an outfit, lifting bosoms and derrieres and quietly amplifying the assests you're proudest of...all while staying seamlessly unseen.
So for today's Fashion Mythbusters, the question stands: Should those lacy little whispers remain hidden? Subtlety isn't always du jour, you know, and if you identify with the ever-growing hubadera tribe, you already know the answer. (It's a great big no, by the way.)
1. Perhaps what you're more worried about is how to blend your pretty unmentionables with fashion's current fave trends. Take, as an opening example, this uber-chill bra x bermuda shorts collab care of Christie Tyler:
2. Crisp suiting, preferrably a tad oversized, makes for a tireless, foolproof solution. Liz Uy, clad in searing, neon green D.D.Daily and 2019's update on the silk camisole—draped and slightly cowl-necked instead of the usual lace-trimmed—agrees.
3. Speaking of satin, we're in a position to say that it looks like the slip dress isn't going anywhere, merely adapting the ebbing whims of the style set's fancy. And their flavor of the week? A generous peppering of layered, nineties-to-noughties rhinestones and Jess Wilson's Prada-inspired statement headbands.
4. On yet another related note, there's also the slip skirt, which, ask any modest Filipino mom around, was originally designed to go under too-thin frocks to prevent unwanted, backlit exposure. Those midi-length versions you're starting to spy in nearly every high-street store are, in remarkable contrast, positively screaming to be seen, boasting enticing, trendy iterations like leopard spots and traffic-cone oranges. Camille Co and Janine Gutierrez start easy with breezy basic whites and infallible, cool-kid Converse.
