Suffice to say, the costume department of Emily in Paris is a busy bunch. Whether or not you’re a fan of the often polarizing fashion of the France-set Netflix series, the outfits of the Lily Collins-led show are as much of character as Emily and company, be it the titular gal’s vibrant wardrobe or Camille’s more Parisian chic ensembles.
And like most narratives, Emily in Paris’ costuming–helmed by Marylin Fitoussi–can be a symbolic representation of the character it covers. The series’ third season sees much of its cast of characters emerge from the rollercoaster-like drama of its previous installments, and not without some growing along the way. To the show’s actors, their characters’ choice of fashion is one major giveaway.
Preview Exclusive: The Emily in Paris Cast Discusses Season 3 Fashion and Their Characters’ Development
“I feel like all of us have really found our identity, and they're all becoming the women that they want to be and trying to discover,” Ashley Park, who plays Emily’s roommate Mindy Chen, tells Preview during an exclusive roundtable. “We self-express through fashion. I really feel like everybody’s found this chic tone this season that's very empowering.”
Emily, in particular, has been on the receiving of many naysayers, whether in-universe or her real-life spectators. The first few seasons have notably seen the character stick out like a sore thumb with her colorful closet, non-fluent French speaking skills, and general “American”-ness, but to her actor Lily Collins, things are admittedly a bit different this time around.
“There's a more French quiet confidence about Emily's wardrobe, even though she's still as bright and bubbly,” the actress says. “She's being influenced by the women that she's surrounded by. She’s feeling quietly confident with her place in the city, and it gets shown in her wardrobe. So [her fashion is] as big as you hoped for, but at the same time, slightly tailored down to feel a little bit more grounded.”
While the series heavily features an array of women’s fashion, men’s style is also a subtle highlight. Characters like William Abadie’s Antoine and Lucien Laviscount’s Alfie seem like the polar opposite of their female counterparts with their traditional suits, but according to the actors, their sartorial choices reveal much about their roles, too.
“It's been an interesting production adventure to try to find exactly what a man like Antoine in his position in Paris would be wearing,” William tells us.
“And it's been wonderful to cooperate with Marylin Fitoussi to define that and to find exactly the right tone for each environment where Antoine might find himself, whether it's a romantic lunch, a day at the office, or an outing at Provence in his house. We've collaborated so well, and I like a nice suit.”
For Lucien, Alfie–Emily’s British boyfriend in the series–has been making styling leaps of his own since his first appearance in season two. “Alfie's style develops throughout season three a little bit more. You get to see Alfie a little bit more laid back. But obviously, Alfie's in the business world. He's a finance lad so he's got to keep sharp as well. I've got to keep up with this guy as much as I can!”
Preview Exclusive: The Emily in Paris Cast Members Reveal Their Favorite Season 3 Outfit
With 14,000 pieces listed during season three’s conceptualization alone and several costume changes throughout its run, it’s safe to say that there will be a couple of style standouts, and even some ensembles we’d want to wear ourselves. The cast members, of course, are no exception.
“When we were outside, I wore [a piece from] a French designer from my own city [Toulouse],” Camille Razat, who plays Camille in the show, says when asked which outfit from season three she’d wear in real life, as herself. “It's in latex and it's a very long all-black trench coat, and I love that.”
Ashley, meanwhile, cites a scene during the season’s finale, where she had a stand-off with new character Nico (Paul Forman). During the heated moment, Mindy was garbed in a little black dress by Balmain, featuring a sultry cut-out on its front half.
“I feel like we saw a different color and a different side of Mindy, as well as a real groundedness when she was wearing that dress,” she says. “It was very comfortable, and it was cool and chic and felt Parisian. I think that that is a dress that I would timelessly keep in my wardrobe.”

Emily might be a scene stealer with her protagonist status, but Lily’s most-wanted ensemble isn’t actually from her character. According to the actress, her favorite season three outfit was worn by none other than Camille.
“In the last episode, Camille wears this very simple [dress] from Jacquemus, but it’s so poetic and stunning in the way it sat on her,” Lily says. “It [had] such a light material but it just [looked] like liquid. And it was just the effortlessness of it that was so stunning and strong. Yeah, I would take that!”
