The term “East-West” is as straightforward as it gets: It's a bag that’s wider than it is tall, quite literally stretching from east to west. First popularized in the 2000s, it was only a matter of time before the silhouette found its way back into the fashion trend cycle. After all, the '90s and Y2k resurgence have been all the buzz in the last four years!

The horizontal and narrow silhouette of the east-west style is undoubtedly eye-catching, especially with its striking geometric and clean-cut shape. As of recent, designer brands have been coming up with east-west iterations of their most iconic handbag silhouettes. Dior was ahead of the trend by two years when they released the D-Joy Bag in 2021, an east-west update on their iconic Lady Dior handbag. And over the last few months, more and more fashion houses have been coming up with their own takes on the re-emergent silhouette: Miu Mius Arcadie, Ferragamo’s Wanda, Alaïa’s Teckel, and more.

Hermés was the latest to jump on the trend after the illustrious fashion house revived the east-west version of their highly sought-after Birkin during their Fall/Winter 2024 runway show at Paris Fashion Week. That's about all the confirmation you need that this silhouette is set to dominate the handbag market this year.
