Few things can claim to be in the same tier as jeans when it comes to wardrobe essentials. With its rough-and-tumble fabric and wear-anywhere ease, there’s nothing as versatile and hardworking as a great pair of jeans–especially when you find the perfect one. This year’s biggest trends, however, challenge you to venture outside your comfort zone by expanding your denim repertoire to include skirts, Canadian tuxes, and blinged-out separates for elevated ensembles that still marry casual comfort. If you’re worried about the rise of low-rise jeans, fret not as 2023 runs the gamut in terms of waistlines and hemlines.
Ahead, five denim trends to massage your sartorial muscles! Read on.
Best Denim Trends of 2023
1. Go Wide
Perhaps the hero image of this trend (a spillover from 2022) is Kate Moss walking the Bottega Veneta Spring/Summer 2023 runway in a refreshingly relaxed outfit comprised of loose-fitting jeans and a checkered shirt. It’s this ease that was also replicated in Dior. Wide-leg jeans spell casual cool this year but this can also be styled up with patterned bralettes as in Etro or a suit jacket as in Tibi. A glam idea? Go for a “braless” look by unbuttoning a chambray and pair with gold jewelry as in Bally.
2. Longer Lengths
Offset your obsession with mini skirts by taking a maxi denim one out for a spin. As opposed to the dressed-down appeal of wide-leg pants, this year’s ground-grazing skirts implore you to flaunt some attitude: go grunge with distressed or blackwash denim as in MM6 Maison Margiela and Balenciaga or make it city-ready with sneakers and fun layers as proposed by Altuzarra. It can even be styled for the evening with statement tops as seen in Burberry and Alaia. Maximalism is the name of the game.
3. Polished Panels
If the term patchwork throws you off a bit, you’ll be glad to know that fashion’s latest offerings are thoughtfully designed for a streamlined look. Such is the case in Stella McCartney and Act N1 which both drawled out straight-cut jeans with v-cut panels for an elongating effect. There was also Karl Lagerfeld’s seductive take via ‘side seamless’ cutout jeans for a new way to bare legs. Perhaps a more palatable case however is Lutz Huelle and Nensi Dojaka with their two-toned paneling for when you can’t decide which denim wash to wear.
4. Low-key Y2K
The obsession with the 2000s is still at an all-time high and designers are continuing this love affair with jeans, daring you to consider them as part of your sartorial statement. A prime example is Blumarine’s sandblasted studded jeans worn with a fringe top or bustier–perhaps for evenings out–but there’s also the more conservative match with oversized denim jackets for a casual look. Ambush had a similar proposition, pairing wide-leg cargo jeans with a party-ready halter top.
5. Head-to-Toe Denim
Drape yourself in denim–but drown–says various brands who are making the case for elevated all-denim looks that would work well for the office or just because. As opposed to the form-fitting Canadian tux iterations of yesteryears, 2023 sees a shift towards oversized, long silhouettes for sophistication. Burberry sized up a button-down with wide-leg jeans, Trussardi matched a bomber jacket with sexy ankle-baring jeans, while Tod’s and Chloe even created trench coats for a structured look.
