Miss Charm Philippines 2025 Cyrille Payumo recently faced criticism after wearing one of the most celebrated gowns in Philippine pageant history: the "Reflection" gown by Mak Tumang, famously worn by Catriona Gray during her final walk as Miss Universe 2018. The gown, which holds a special place in Philippine pageantry, became the center of a debate as fans questioned whether such a celebrated piece should be reinterpreted.

The decision for Cyrille Payumo to wear the gown for her farewell walk as the reigning Miss Universe Philippines-Pampanga drew mixed reactions from the public. While some praise the tribute, many others have expressed disappointment that the gown was not kept exclusive to Catriona's historic moment.
In response to the backlash, Cyrille released an official statement on her social media channels, apologizing for any offense her decision may have caused. She revealed that the gown was made available to her through Mak Tumang himself, who sponsored her final walk gown for the Miss Universe Philippines-Pampanga 2025 event.

"Days before the event, I was humbled to learn that the brilliant designer, Mak Tumang, would be sponsoring my final walk gown as I passed the crown to the next representative of our beloved province, Pampanga. To add to the magic of the moment, I was informed that one of the options from his masterpieces would be the final gown of Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray," Cyrille shared.
She described her mixed emotions upon learning about the opportunity, expressing her excitement and a deep sense of privilege. However, she also acknowledged the divided opinions the gown’s reappearance sparked.

"I understand that wearing such an iconic gown has sparked divided opinions. To those who may have been hurt or offended, I want to clarify that causing pain was never my intention. My goal was to honor not only the victory of bringing the Miss Philippines Charm title home to Pampanga but also to celebrate the visionary artistry of Mak Tumang," she explained.
Cyrille also took responsibility for any unintended consequences of her decision and apologized for possibly overshadowing Catriona Gray’s legacy. "I recognize that my actions may have unintentionally diminished the significance of Catriona Gray’s monumental achievements, and for that, I am deeply sorry. I take full responsibility for any misunderstandings or hurt feelings that may have resulted," she added.
The heartfelt statement concluded with an acknowledgment of the experience as a moment of learning and growth, with Cyrille expressing gratitude to Mak Tumang for the opportunity and to her supporters for their understanding.
About Mak Tumang's "Reflection" Gown

Mak Tumang's "Reflection" gown is not just a masterpiece of Filipino craftsmanship but a powerful symbol of national pride. According to the celebrated designer, it draws inspiration from the Philippine Eagle, envisioning the majestic bird soaring over the turquoise seas of the Philippine archipelago. The gown symbolizes a balance of strength and humility, mirroring the eagle’s ability to reflect on its surroundings despite its might.
As he explained: “Despite its mighty ability to soar up high far beyond the clouds, [the Philippine Eagle] could still manage to look down until the point of reflecting itself on the shiny waters. This display of both might and humility is the call each of us heeds.”

Mak further emphasized the gown’s deeper meaning, representing the Filipino nation’s journey of introspection and self-discovery. “By doing so, we could be able to mirror the beauty that is within us, to mirror what is true and just, and to mirror the light which illuminates our path,” he shared.
