Do you know that Comme des Garcons, the label of choice of cool people like artists, musicians, Tokyo-philes, and anyone who gravitates toward uncommon essentials, has been releasing holiday-themed collections for about 20 years now.
Last year, it did a sort of tartan-grinch collection, and the year before that, it was all about emojis. This year, CDG outdid itself, collaborating with stylish friends, nine cool labels, in fact, for the Friends and Comme des Garcons Happy Holidays collection.
Comme des Garcons teams up with nine luxury labels for the Friends and Comme des Garcons Happy Holidays capsule collection.
Revelers who joined the party include Gucci, Burberry, Maison Margiela, Jean Paul Gaultier, Simone Rocha, Craig Green, Walter Van Beirendonck, Marine Serre, and Stussy.
For the set, Rei Kawakubo, the elusive designer of the Japanese company, asked each partner for a design fragment, such as the ribbon stripe of Gucci or the checks of Burberry, that will serve as inpspiration for the pieces.
The result is a lively set of T-shirts, pullovers, and a tote (Gucci), all one-of-kind-things to get for yourself or as a gift.
"We have always enjoyed the synergies of CDG-style collaborations, which is not about brainstorming and back-and-forth with the other party but about trust and respect,” says Adrian Joffe, husband of Kawakubo and president of Comme des Garcons International, about the collaboration process for the set.
"Rei does not enjoy two captains on a ship. So we either leave it to them or ask that they leave it to her. The nine brands were very happy to leave it to her this time,” he also notes. The collection is now available at the Comme des Garcons shop in Manila.
