In a world where conventions often dictate the trends, Cecilie Bahnsen stands as an antithesis to existing sartorial norms and preconceived notions.
While traditional womenswear has long been defined by figure-hugging silhouettes and Scandinavian fashion associated with subdued minimalism, the Danish designer's eponymous brand represents a departure from these stereotypes. With a focus on voluminous designs and unabashed femininity, Cecilie's creations breathe new life into contemporary women's fashion—a celebration of individuality and the power of personal style.
In this comprehensive guide, we give an overview of Cecilie Bahnsen, the rise of her independent fashion label, and the philosophy behind her well-loved pieces.
Who is Cecilie Bahnsen?
Cecilie Frost Bahnsen, born on February 15, 1984, is a fashion designer from Copenhagen. Her early exposure to fashion was through her mother, who worked as a seamstress at the Danish Design School. This connection led her to intern at the school when she was just 12 years old, where she was exposed to the creative process and saw the mood boards that students had created. This experience ignited her passion for fashion and inspired her to pursue a career in the field.

Cecile went on to formally study at the Danish Design School a few years later. During this time, she worked as an assistant to a local designer Anja Vang Krag, contributing to opera costumes for The Royal Danish Theatre, as well as some freelance projects for Christian Dior. This experience solidified her aspiration to penetrate the fashion industry, a goal which she eventually achieved upon completing her degree in 2007.

Soon after, Cecilie secured an internship with John Galliano, the British couturier renowned for his work at Givenchy (1995 to 1996) and Christian Dior (1996 to 2011). This internship ultimately landed her a full-time position as a print designer and first-line assistant for the celebrated designer. In 2010, she moved to London to pursue a master’s degree in womenswear fashion design at the Royal College of Art (RCA). Upon graduating, Cecilie was personally recruited by Erdem– a fellow RCA alumnus and British womenswear designer– to join his eponymous brand as an assistant.
In 2015, Cecilie returned to Copenhagen to launch her namesake label, marking the beginning of her journey as an independent designer.
Cecilie Bahnsen Brand History
Cecilie Bahnsen launched her eponymous label in 2015 with a modest collection of just 10 pieces. The brand quickly caught the attention of Dover Street Market, a high-fashion retailer, during London Fashion Week. Impressed by her designs, the retail giant bought the collection exclusively for the first two seasons, marking a significant milestone for her brand.
Her success continued to soar when she won the prestigious Wessel and Vett Fashion Prize in 2016. This accolade, coupled with being named a finalist for the LVMH prize in 2017, catapulted her brand to new heights. In just one season, her company expanded from ten accounts to 27, enabling Cecilie to grow her brand and team.

Having been a mainstay at Copenhagen Fashion Week for years, Cecilie made her debut at Paris Fashion Week with a digital show in autumn 2020, a move that further solidified her brand's presence on the international fashion stage.

As pandemic restrictions loosened up, Cecilie made her physical show debut for Fall/Winter 2022, which subsequently cemented her position as a regular on the Paris Fashion Week schedule.

Cecilie Bahnsen's Signature Style and Design Ethos
Cecilie Bahnsen's design ethos is a harmonious blend of couture and ready-to-wear, characterized by timeless elegance and a relaxed sensibility. Influenced by the works of John Galliano and Erdem, her early exposure to their designs kindled her love for couture and a deep-seated passion for quality and craftsmanship.
This passion is evident in her approach to design, where she delicately balances her couture sensibilities with the clean lines of Scandinavian minimalism. She sculpts billowing silhouettes and uses unique, hand-designed fabrics to create pieces that are both elegant and comfortable—never compromising on the importance of wearability.

Cecilie's designs are a departure from the stark minimalism typically associated with Scandinavian fashion. Instead, her creations are romantic and voluminous, a distinct style that she describes as a fusion of her Scandinavian heritage and romantic influences from her time in Paris and London.

From her debut collection, Cecilie has embraced a signature style rooted in femininity. She often showcases gauzy baby-doll dresses, puff-sleeved blouses, and jackets with a school-girl charm. Her use of jacquard and organza adds volume and a sense of movement in each of her designs. These fabrics, sourced from Italy and Switzerland, lend a sense of modernity to her collections, showcasing Cecilie's forward-thinking approach and masterful use of textiles.

Cecilie strives to make her clothes accessible and wearable. She coined the term "everyday couture" to describe her approach, emphasizing the importance of creating pieces that seamlessly integrate into daily life. This ethos, combined with her meticulous attention to detail and innovative use of fabrics, has established Cecilie Bahnsen as a burgeoning figure in the world of contemporary womenswear.
