To this day, the question remains: How did Carrie Bradshaw afford to live in an apartment in Manhattan wearing a designer wardrobe on a columnist’s one-article-per-week salary? The answer: It’s all fiction! But despite it being a work of imagination, a majority–if not, all–of Carrie’s outfits in Sex and the City were composed of actual designer pieces. So when we learned that one of her bags on the show was fake, it still came as a shocker!

In a previous video interview done by Sarah Jessica Parker, the actress revealed that the big blue Hermès Birkin bag in the sixth episode of Season 5 was actually fake.

“I can tell you everything that I know about this outfit. Okay, that is not a real Hermès bag, just so you know,” she said. “Pat had a person, and she was like, ‘Do you want one? I can get you one.’ ‘No, I don’t really, not… I don’t need one.’ But this isn’t real,” she said, referring to costume designer and stylist of Sex and the City and Emily in Paris Patricia Field.
The green tube dress that she wore together with the bag, however, was real Juicy Couture. Explaining why they chose this particular ensemble, Sarah explained that she was “super pregnant” at the time, but Carrie (her character) was not. The oversized Birkin bag was an attempt to hide her growing baby bump. “Look how big that bag is. That bag had one job to do and did it very poorly. Maybe if it was a real Hermès bag it would’ve done a better job,” she joked.
Sex and the City is streaming on Netflix.
