The coquette aesthetic has given birth to several sub-trends over the past two years or so. Ballet flats, corsetry, and an abundance of bows have all returned to our wardrobes thanks to the unapologetically feminine style agenda. As of late, a clothing piece that's been bubbling up in the sartorial conversation is the bubble skirt.
Trend Alert: Bubble Skirts Are Back from the '80s!
Bubble skirts are characterized by a folded-over bottom hemline, which results in a delightfully flouncy shape. Such a style cue was introduced in the 1950s. With the intent of highlighting a woman's waist, couturiers Cristobal Balenciaga, Pierre Cardin, and Hubert Givenchy were pioneers in pushing forward the voluminous silhouette.
The billowy skirt gained prominence throughout the '80s, with prom queens and actual royals like Princess Diana frequently donning them. On the runway, the semi-risque piece made a major comeback through the Spring/Summer 2024 presentations of Miu Miu, Tory Burch, Bally, Paloma Wool, and more.

During the same season, labels such as Staud displayed how the silhouette can be applied to maxi skirts as well. Whether it ends way above the knees or right by the ankles, it's all about the volume when it comes to the fun and flirty piece.

Global personalities such as Sabrina Carpenter and Kylie Jenner have since hopped on the trend, rocking their skirts everywhere from the Saturday Night Live stage to seaside vacations.

On our digital pages, bubble skirts have also made an appearance. To kick off 2024, Melai Cantiveros donned an avocado green maxi from Dona Lim for her first-ever solo spread. And just this month, EJ Jallorina joined our biggest Pride cover to date wearing a petite iteration of the piece paired with a Simone Rocha top.
