Meet the cross between sporty blokecore and dainty coquette.

Thanks to TikTok, practically anything can be a viral fashion trend nowadays. Just this year alone, we’ve seen a wide array of styles make rounds on the internet, from the doll-inspired Barbiecore to the summery tomato girl aesthetic. Now joining the endless list of 2023 fashion microtrends is the blokette trend, a new sub-genre born from the hyperfeminine balletcore aesthetic and the sporty blokecore look.

Below, we take a closer look at the viral style and discuss what it really is, how to achieve it, and why it’s even worth trying out in the first place. You know the drill—just keep scrolling and take style cues as you go!

What is the “Blokette” Trend?

Although there are plenty of microtrends that went viral this year, most of them root from two main themes: athleisure and hyperfemininity. In today’s internet speak, these themes are dubbed as the blokecore trend and the coquette aesthetic, respectively.

Reminiscent of a stereotypical British soccer fan, blokecore is essentially a stylish re-imagination of English “bloke” culture. Some of its key elements include sports jerseys, baggy pants, football cleats, and vintage tracksuits—basically, anything you’d spot in a soccer match audience. Although traditionally characterized as a masculine look, blokecore has now been adopted by people of all genders online.

Meanwhile, the coquette aesthetic is the complete 180 of blokecore. Characterized by dainty frills, cute bows, soft lace, and candy hues, the aesthetic embraces stereotypically girly elements as an ode to unapologetic femininity.

If you combine these two looks together, you get blokette—the halfway point soccer and ballet. The specific term was first coined by hosts Biz Sherbert and Alexi Alario on their podcast Nymphet Alumni at the height of the Fifa Women’s World Cup last July. “When you’re a kid, fashion and sport are often pitted against each other, but now we’re seeing the fashion crowd wearing jerseys and soccer trainers,” Biz shared.

Even before it skyrocketed to popularity this year, however, the look was already spotted on runways as early as 2022. For their Fall/Winter 2022 showcase, Miu Miu presented ensembles of slouchy tees teamed with pleated mini skirts, leg warmers, and ballet flats. David Koma also took a similar, albeit sportier, direction for his Autumn/Winter 2022 collection, styling athletic jerseys with flowy skirts and pointed pumps. In addition, Wales Bonner has been consistently incorporating blokette looks into their collections in line with their frequent collaborations with Adidas

Since then, international style stars like Bella Hadid, Jennie Kim, and Ruby Lyn have been adopting the look and highlighting both hypermasculinity and hyperfemininity in their outfits. Internet influencers and local celebrities then followed suit, pushing the aesthetic's hashtag to gain hundreds and millions of views on various social media platforms.
