We're calling it—the academia aesthetic isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Everyone and their mother has been obsessed with sporting preppy looks lately, from dark Corpcore-esque ensembles to polished light academia looks. This academia craze has also led specific closet staples to go viral online, some of which include pointy kitten heels, structured lady bags, and most recently, Bayonetta glasses.
Sleek and smart, these trendy specs are the next cool-girl staple to get your hands on ASAP. Keep reading to find out why!
What Are Bayonetta Glasses?
Although the term "Bayonetta glasses" is well-known in the fashion space, it actually draws inspiration from a Japanese video game sharing the same name. Designed by Mari Shimazaki, the game's titular character Bayonetta always wore a sleek pair of black rectangular glasses. Consequently, slim glasses with oval or soft rectangular frames were named after her signature look.

These tiny specs first became popular during the early aughts. Beyond being a common sight at eye clinics, the frames were a favorite among celebrities and it girls thanks to their subtly sultry look. It wouldn't be surprising to catch Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie sporting the accessory while encountering the paparazzi, and it was even worn by Gisele Bündchen and Meryl Streep in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada.

Recently, the retro glasses had its moment in the spotlight again following the latest Y2K craze. Miu Miu's bookish Fall 2023 runway show featured bespectacled models in cardigans, kitten heels, and printed skirts. Similarly, the Fall 2023 collections of Balenciaga and Stella McCartney also included wired Bayonetta frames.
Outside of the runway, Hollywood fashion mavens like Bella Hadid, Gabbriette, and Julia Fox have already copped their own pair of Bayonettas. Asian style stars like Hyein and our very own Andrea Brillantes have also tried out the trend early as well! Check out how they styled the pair below for some quick OOTD inspo.

Celebrities Who Are Wearing Bayonetta Glasses
1. Bella Hadid
Bella Hadid is the top celebrity who comes to mind when it comes to the Librariancore aesthetic. Here, she puts a sultry spin on the trend with thin green specs, fitted black pants, and a striped button-down left half-open.

2. BIBI
FYI, you don't have to wear Bayonetta glasses with preppy pieces. BIBI, for instance, wears hers with a loose sweater and cargo pants to look more put-together.

3. Lexie Liu
To elevate her casual OOTD, Lexie Liu sports her black Bayonettas with a collared crop top, low-waist jeans, and white kicks. She also bares a bit of her Miu Miu underwear to complete the trendy look.

4. Andrea Brillantes
As expected from a Gen Z style star, Andrea Brillantes was one of the first local celebrities who hopped on the Bayonetta bandwagon. While sightseeing abroad, she styled a black pair with a lace top and delicate jewelry.

5. Gela Munoz
Dressing for Japan's chilly weather, Gela Munoz bundled up in different layers and textures to shake up her all-black ensemble. Her dark Bayonetta sunnies tied in the whole look!

6. Hailey Bieber
Wine glass in hand and nature all around, Hailey Bieber was serving countryside chic in a no-fail combo of a tank top and blue jeans. To elevate, she utilized a net cardigan with fur-lined hems and matched it with a pair of Bayonetta shades.

7. Jennie Kim
Reflecting her cool aura, Jennie Kim sported blue-tinted specs in her big show in Paris. The global performer styled it with a fitted top complete with ruffle details, and a chunky coat adorned with a leopard print.

8. Sabrina Carpenter
A collared shirt cropped by the waist, undergarments peeking through a mini skirt, and heels worn with socks, Sabrina Carpenter embodied the flirty and preppy side of a Miu Miu girl. And what better accessory to cap off the look than oval Bayonettas?

9. Maloi Ricalde of BINI
If the OOTD is fun, playful, and seemingly hard for just anyone to pull off, it’s probably Maloi Ricalde’s. The P-pop star has formed a distinct style, and part of her signature elements are Bayonetta frames. In a recent fit pic, her specs came in tortoise, whose colors matched those of her cheetah-printed belt and shoes.

10. Nadine Lustre
A fresh take on the aforementioned Librariancore aesthetic, Nadine Lustre looked geek-yet-chic in a textured jacket cinched at the waist by a belt, and paired with an A-line skirt. Her hair was tied in a neat bun, and her Bayonetta glasses shone at the forefront.
