If you’re a fashion fan and you’ve watched the Barbie film then you were probably smitten by all the picture-perfect outfits worn by the cast, particularly that of the lead star Margot Robbie. Keen observers might have noticed some tweed looks that bring to mind a certain French fashion house. Well, it turns out that Chanel actually joined forces with the makers of Barbie and provided some pink-tastic outfits!
“Five silhouettes will be seen on screen, made available by the House with the support of Virginie Viard. Oscar-winning costume designer and friend of the House, Jacqueline Durran, was given a selection of outfits from the Ready-to-Wear, COCO BEACH and COCO NEIGE collections,” says the press release.
Margot Robbie, who plays the titular character, is a Chanel global ambassador. Aside from Schiaparelli, Versace, and Moschino, she donned a few Chanel ensembles during the movie’s press tour.
On screen, some of the five hand-picked outfits included matching tweed sets complete with heels and jewelry. It was also easy to spot the heart-shaped quilted bag during the tail-end of the film! In an interview, Margot talked about the baby pink tweed look which was apparently from the brand’s ‘90s archives. It was worn by none other than supermodel Claudia Schiffer!
“There were some incredible outfits that I actually got to wear that Claudia Schiffer herself—who's kind of like a real life Barbie—wore. In fact, one of the archival suits that I wore had the little label saying Claudia on it,” she says.
Although costume designer Jacqueline Durran pulled inspiration mainly from past Barbie fashions, one thing she kept in mind was achieving perfection (just like ‘stereotypical Barbie herself’). Chanel’s prim yet fun and fabulous outfits definitely achieve that feminine energy.
“Barbie could really wear anything. You need some ground rules,” she tells Vanity Fair. “And one of the ground rules was that [Barbie] would always be perfectly dressed for whatever she was going to do. And it’s also ‘beautiful people in beautiful places doing beautiful things.’”
Aside from the on-point pink hues, what’s interesting about this Chanel and Barbie collab would be the roots of the fashion brand in female empowerment. After all, Coco Chanel was all about liberating the woman through well-designed clothes. A perfect fashion tie-up indeed!
