Balenciaga strikes again! The luxury brand has grown a reputation for its outrageous repertoire of releases, and it seems that it’s not slowing down anytime soon. Creative director Denma showcased the Spring 2025 collection at Shanghai’s Museum of Art Pudong, where, among a slew of gray monochromes, was a piece that caught some of the internet’s attention: a clutch that looked exactly like a shoebox.

On May 30, the Spanish luxury line unveiled the Spring 2025 collection in Shanghai, China, where the runway and celebrity guests like Michelle Yeoh were met with a downpour of rain. The collection exhibited signature Denma-era motifs in a largely dark palette with utilitarian and baggy ensembles, paired with accessories that spoke to the creative director’s affinity for more peculiar pieces. A key creation spotted in several looks was the Shopper Sneaker Box, which resembled a run-of-the-mill shoebox.

Unlike cardboard containers that come with freshly-bought sneakers, Balenciaga’s clutch iteration is crafted from leather. It snaps open with a magnetic closure, revealing an interior lined with a lighter-shaded material. Down to its details, its similarities are uncanny, complete with cut-out edges that make a semicircle hole.

Several users on the internet, however, weren’t pleased with the continuation of Balenciaga’s so-called “gimmick.” Some netizens echoed the “social experiment” theory, a thought that often pops up in its previous outlandish releases, including the trash bag, towel skirt, and Fall/Winter 2024’s tape bracelet.

Others considered the brand’s founder Cristóbal Balenciaga and the state of the label today.

Meanwhile, some came to the defense of the brand.

However, as the way of the internet, other users found the humor in the piece. (Here's a question: Does the box come with a box?)
